I've Forgotten How To Do Anything

It could be your mod setup that's doing it. Sometimes mods can have strange effects on the aerodynamic model and cause ships that should reach orbit easily to fail to even brush the edge of space. Installing FAR can help mitigate that, though be sure you include procedural fairings as well if you plan to go that route.

The only mod I have is MechJeb. I don't even use it much.

OP -

I wanted to see how simple I could make a ship and make it to orbit. Here's my design. Please forgive my spelling errors. No RCS needed being such a small ship. Assemble from top to bottom:

1x Mk16 Parachute

1x Command Pod Mk1

4x Sepratron I (mounted diagonally on CP)

1x Z-100 Rechargeable Battery Pack (mounted nadar on CP)

1x TR-18A Stack Decoupler

1x FL-T200 Fuel Tank

1x LV-909 Liquid Fuel Engine

1x TR-18A Stack Decoupler

1x FL-T800 Fuel Tank

1x LV-T45 Liquid Fuel Engine

4x TT-38K Radial Decoupler (mounted radially on FL-T800)

4x FL-T400 Fuel Tank (mounted on TT-38K)

4x LV-T30 Liquid Fuel Engine

Note:

Arrange the staging so that Sepratrons activate above the parachute. Top Decoupler is on it's own stage below parachute. LV-T45 and LV-T30 are all on the bottom stage and fire together.

Actions:

-abort

Sepratron - activate engine

LV-T45 Liquid Fuel Engine - shutdown

LV-T30 Liquid Fuel Engind - shutdown

TR-18A - decouple (top one only!)

-custom 1

Sepratron - activate engine

Flight:

activate SAS, apply full throttle, and launch. Keep vertical until after 8000m. Gently press bring to 45 degrees. Should be after 10000m now. Keep at this angle. When the four LV-T30's burn out, decouple. This happens close to the gravity turn. After the LV-T30 buns out, decouple and cut engine. Switch to map view and watch for the of assent. Keep ship pointed prograde and fire when at top keeping apleapse below 80km. repeat until pariapse is above 70km. Enjoy the ride.

Deorbit:

Turn retograde and press "1" to fire the Sepratron's. Decouple the final stage. at around 3000m AGL, deploy parachutes. Ride the parachutes until you land.

Hope this helps

I suggest you either install Kerbal Engineer Redux or use MechJeb's dV tallying feature in the VAB. It makes engineering a lot easier if you don't have to guess what your rocket is capable of or do the tedious math by hand to find out. Be sure that you have at least 4500dV in your lifter stage, or you will not go to space today (unless you use FAR, in which case you need around 3500 to 4000dV depending on aerodynamic stability).

Is that TWO cupolas on the top of your Mun rocket? Small wonder you're having trouble with that kind of weight. You'd probably need to look at adding another, larger stage below the whole thing. (Or another outer layer if you're asparagusing).

No, a Cupola and a lander can. I do realize that the Mun rocket may be slightly overengineered, though. :P

Just ran a Mun return mission with an approximation of your minmus ship, the biggest problem is the second stage TWR. I would suggest replacing that central engine with an LV-T30 if you're using a T45 there. Other options are cutting mass from the payload(lighter lander legs, and perhaps replacing the capsule with a 1man lander can) or replacing the FL-T400 fuel tanks in the bottommost stage with FL-T800s, so your low TWR stage is at a point of your ascent where it doesn't matter that it's low TWR. I'd also try removing some of the fins or nosecones if you aren't having problems with attitude control.

The simplest ship to reach orbit is a Mk1 Command pod, a Rockomax X200-32 Fuel Tank and a Skipper engine.

I don't think that would make it all the way to orbit, it's only 4140 vac ∆v. A 1m lander can, x200-16 fuel tank, and LV-T30 would do it quite easily, at 4797∆v.

I was browsing through Scott Manley videos recently, and decided to watch his Mun lander video to see how he built his rockets, and he shows a nice design for a basic asparagus staged rocket that is pretty damn efficient, good enough for lighter Minmus and Mun missions! Give it a watch, it should help! If you scale it up to 2m tanks, Mainsails and Skippers, you get a rocket that can take lighter payloads REALLY far! With a nuclear engine staged on top after the primary bottom stage, you have a rocket that can easily make Eeloo!

This one for asparagus staging:

Sorry, I meant a Jumbo-64. I had calculated and tested it a few weeks ago and forgot which fuel tank. A jumbo-64 gives 4556m/s.

By my calculations, it would barely be able to lift off. You need to consider TWR.

But with such a low TWR the delta-V requirement to reach orbit rises well above the standard 4550m/s value.
Indeed, it's not at all efficient. The idea was just to make something simple.

Then again, it's not as bad as you might expect. KER says it has 4907/5674 atmo/vacuum delta-v. I just quickly flew it, and with a flatter ascent profile than I previously used (I normally ascend too steeply I think) I had ~790 dV left once I'd reached an 80km orbit.
