Side note: How's this look for a graphics card?

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8869861&CatId=7387

It's not high end of course, but something tells me it still rates above the dual GeForce 280Ms I was using before.

#EDIT: Concern. Mobo tells me it has a PCI Express x16 slot. Vid card says it likes a PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot. Is Mobo slot 3.0? I has no idea.

PCIe 3.0 came out in 2010, so almost certainly the mobo supports it.

Actually it is not PCIe 3.0. Only Intel based boards have 3.0. AMD does not have that implemented int heir chipsets as of yet.

It's not a deal breaker though. I can't really think of anything that requires PCIe 3.0 and the video card will run at 2.0 capability if the slot is not 3.0 capable.

To add, price aside, I'm not sure why you're opting for a MicroATX board in a case that can accommodate standard ATX boards.

Tigerdirect had a bundle deal on the case, mobo, proc, fan. Did it to get a cheaper rate :)

#EDIT: GOOD LORD. I know I've been not paying attention to the hardware side of the house these past couple years, but this "cheapo" graphics card I was looking at? Makes the dualie 280Ms in the old laptop look like so much rubbish.

Did a little digging regarding performance of that inexpensive card. "Crysis 3 - 1920x1080 - Very High 4x AA 27.5 fps". I call that still playable! I can't imagine what a difference I'm going to see in KSP when I have everything together.

Technology. Ya gotta love it!

#EDIT2: Graphics card ordered! Just gotta fish up memory, thermal paste, adapter cables or mounting bracket for laptop hard drives in the computer case. And that's it!

You're so close... in fact, you'll probably be back up and running before the Asteroid Update.

I'm still making a deorbiter, though.

[spoilerS FOLLOW]

I'm thinking of, at least to see if it's even possible, to send up a large rocket with about 20 individual probes with Claws and 2 parachutes apiece. Then they latch onto the asteroid. The rest of the rocket attaches and diverts the asteroid into an aerobrake. Once the 'chutes are low enough, they deploy and slow the asteroid.

Eventually, I'm just going to make a thing that attaches to the asteroid and has an s-load of landing legs on it. And just a few mainsails....

[spoilerS END]

KSP actually depends on single threaded processor performance while barely supporting the gpu and therefore likes i7 processors more. I wish they would implement physx for my monster gpu to complement my cpu already.

An i7 doesnt make sense for KSP, a i5 would yield the same performance for 100$ less.

@Whackjob: The R7 260X is a realy good choice! But i doubt you can get 30 Fps in Crysis 3 out of it on Very High, the benchmarks i know say its more like 15 Fps...

Afaik you want to move you SSD from your Laptop to your PC. You wont need adapter cables, they should have standart SATA interface (you still need a normal SATA cable). Also it doesnt matter if you have a mounting bracket, you could lay the SSD in your PC or attach it with double-sided tape.

I already had an i7 in my laptop. It is true that single core performance is similar in both chips.

Let me show my crypto currency hate induced bias. Team green all the way.

I was going to get the r9 280x... until it went from 260 to over 400. At least prices are starting to drop now but amd lost many a potential customer to the allure of the gtx 760.

My gpu. Runs bf3 and arma 3 with all ultra settings at 1050 p... no compromises were made. http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-SuperClocked-Dual-Link-Graphics-02G-P4-2765-KR/dp/B00DHW4HXY/ref=pd_cp_pc_0

Hmm, go with what you have then, and when you can afford it, get a full ATX board and a more solid heatsink if you're going to overclock (the one you have is good, but it was designed for a slim profile case and there's better options for a full profile case).

As for the rest, memory you can get by with two 4MB sticks for a good price (If you're expecting any real better performance you're going to have to go 64-bit anyways so might as well take advantage of it) thermal paste will be included on the heatsink but if you plan on swapping it out and doing some serious overclocking then Arctic Silver is the go to choice. Get the small tube unless you use it a lot. You're more likely to find a full mounting bracket for the hard drives that will have adapters built in.

Speaking of which, do you have a Power Supply ready to go? The system won't run without one.

I plan to at some point. I'll call that "expansion phase". Right now priority is in getting running again cheaply and quickly. :)

Tigerdirect has good memory I see. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7906489&CatId=4534 ~$80

Proc didn't have thermal paste, but you're right... I should've checked the sink box. Arctic Silver has a good rep... even I remember that name. Mounting brackets... definitely will need to get.

Speaking of which, do you have a Power Supply ready to go? The system won't run without one.

Bundle kit thing came with a 550W supply. Not stellar, but should be functional.

Holy moly... I just stuck my old hp laptop motherboard and hard drive inside an old dell xps studio mid tower using scotch tape. And it works... will post pictures soon.

Well. That was probably not a very good idea. You should've gotten a nVidia card, once KSP gets Unity 5 with the latest PhysX, nVidia cards will be a whole lot faster than AMD cards.

KSP runs on CPU PhysX, which is completely video card agnostic. Unity 5 does not remove the CPU PhysX branch - to the contrary, the internal update to PhysX 3 massively accelerates it.

There is also no announced intention and no valid reason for Squad to suddenly shaft a good portion of their userbase by switching exclusively to GPU-based PhysX. Especially since no such thing currently exists for KSP and would have to be developed from scratch.

Please people, if you must give computer advice to others, please make at least a modicum of effort to know what you're talking about =/
