FLY 'ROUND THE WORLD

(if possible, can someone please make a logo for this? :) )

After the Kerbal Space Program "perfected" all things space (aka perfected how to crash spectacularly), Bill-Gates Kerman decided on a new championship.

"No one's flown a lot... Let's go around the world!"

Only problem? Bill-Gates ain't that rich, you know. He can't rent the runway for long, so hurry up with that flight.

Please note, the flights are judged by SPEED TO COMPLETE THE CIRCUMNAVIGATION.

RULES

1. If you want to qualify for the stock leaderboard, do not use any mods, excluding RasterPropMonitor/KSI MFD and Flight Engineer IN THE SPH ONLY.

2. If you want to qualify for the FAR leaderboard, do not use any mods other than FAR and the ones mentioned above.

3. No debug console cheats or modded CFGs for stock parts.

4. The craft must not USE any oxidizer. If you want, you can use rocket fuel tanks with the oxidizer drained.

5. RAPIER engines are not allowed. They are rocket engines with an air-breathing open state, not jets.

6. Plane must take off from runway and land NEAR the runway(you can clearly see the runway/SPH), if not on it.

7. Plane must not drop any parts, including drop tanks and useless engines.

8. Cannot go above 80km at most (I know some planes can get to 80km with jets, NO FURTHER)

TO SUBMIT AN ENTRY

Use this format:

Name of competitor

Name of vessel

OPTIONAL: Description of vehicle

Images/Video of flight INCLUDING F3 window at the end of the flight.

Achievements you think it should get

ACHIEVEMENTS AVALIABLE

Please note that achievements are NOT stackable between 2+ flights and that previous flights will be overwritten if new ones are submitted by the player.

Light Bugger- A plane that is less than 6 tons

Unefficient- Fly below 10000m for the entire trip

Too low!- Fly below 5000m for the entire trip

Jesus, that was close!- Buzz the tower of the Island Runway or the KSC

More than one of us- Bring more than 1 kerbal

VTOL FTW- A plane that has VTOL capabilities

Precision Landing- Land directly on the runway (Only combines with Speedster/My Clock isn't even running! if done in required time (40/20 mins respectively)

Flying to that needle in the haystack- Land directly on the VAB landing pad (IF you have the achievement VTOL FTW)

STOCK LEADERBOARD

1st Place - Kasuha at 38min 33sec with Pogo Stick (Precision Landing, VTOL FTW, Speedster, One of the Machingbirds, See, saving the planet!, Light bugger)

2nd Place -Koolkei at 40min 50sec with UNKNOWN VEHICLE (More Heat Insulator Needed, Precision Landing)

3rd Place - Claw ** MOST ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR ** at 42min 43sec with Moller and Bedstead (?) (Light Bugger, See, saving the planet!, More Heat Insulator Needed, Never mind the Gas x3, VTOL FTW, Flying to that Needle in the Haystack, More than one of us)

4th Place - OTehNoes at 57min 58sec with K-3 (Never mind the Gas x1, Precision Landing, More Heat Insulator Needed, See, saving the planet!)

FAR LEADERBOARD

none

GATECRASHERS (Yes, stolen from the K-Prize challenge ;) )

Batz_10k probably used some... shady connections for that autopilot equipped on his K-17. His cookies have been confiscated.

Added to leaderboard. Please correct me on the achievements if required.

- below 6 tons

- achieved over 2300 m/s orbital and over 1700 ground speed (not sure which one you mean as "speed")

- uses one jet engine (unless turbojet doesn't count as jet)

And its name is Pogo Stick

This is one I submitted for my own challenge which died a while back, but it stemmed from a test flight that ended in a circumnavigation! I haven't got any take-off pictures but It was a straight equatorial circumnavigation!

The plane is called 'K3', the from take-off to stationary on the runway again the clock read 00:54:53, not exactly a blistering time but an entry nonetheless! And I believe my effort qualifies for:

- More Heat Insulator Needed

- See, saving the planet!

- Forget the gas (I could have probably done a second run around I had enough fuel left!)

- Precision Landing

Although I just realized that I broke one of the rules (no engineer in flight)... so honourable mention?

This is the K17 GlobeMaster... carrying 3 Kerbals in style

2048x1280.resizedimage

It flies ... on the ragged edge of a multi-engine flameout/stall

2048x1280.resizedimage

Things went smoothly for the first half of the flight..

2048x1280.resizedimage

Then a moment's inattention led to a terrifying flat spin at 30km... I barely regained control and recovered at 3500m (a miracle happened and the aircraft didn't break up like it had in previous attempts...)

2048x1280.resizedimage

..only to discover a design flaw. Once the nacelle tanks were empty the engines flamed out rather than using the centre tanks fuel. Yep, you guessed it. another spin. Some desperate fuel transfers later and I managed to get two engines relit and managed to pull out of the spin down at 6000m (yes, Jonfert, Mac and Philbald... you have every right to look terrified!)

2048x1280.resizedimage

...some time later...home is in sight

2048x1280.resizedimage

...oops. Did I mention that it was quite easy to lose an engine (or two) on landing?...oh well nobody died

2048x1280.resizedimage

all done in a leisurely 1hr17m

I was going to say, I think I've seen this recently. :P

Vehicle name: Spiderweb

Description:

I'm following suit with Kusuha and reusing my Ultimate VTOL. I think I might redo the flight first and aim for < 40 mins (currently sits at 42 mins), but I think this qualifies for a few categories. :)

Light Bugger- weighs ~4 tons.

More Heat Insulator Needed- Achieved a speed of 2227 m/s

See, saving the planet!- Uses only one TurboJet engine

Forget the Gas- Landed with enough fuel for 3 more circumnavigations

VTOL FTW- Definitely VTOL

Flying to that needle in the haystack- Land on the VAB landing pad (probably cost me the < 40 minutes)

More than one of us- Brought Bob (pilot) and Billy-Boblorf (co-pilot)

I have questions on...

- Jesus, that was close!- Buzz the tower --- Confirm you're talking about the control tower by the SPH?

- Precision Landing- Land directly on the runway --- Can I do this after the official time? (i.e. Land on the runway, then the VAB, or vice-versa?)

- Can you stack these awards? I mean, such as if I redo the flight to get time below 40mins but don't land on the VAB, which submission do you take?

- Is there an altitude limit?

I might redo this just to see if I can knock some time off. :D

EDIT: Ack. I just noticed I used MJ during construction instead of KER on this one, although everything is stock in flight. If that really bugs you, I can retake the VAB picture with KER instead of MJ.

question.

if i do the circumnavigation twice, does it count? i mean, i did it. *and just shy of half of my fuel is consumed. landed on the runway. and do it again?

did it, but busted on landing.... that took a long time dammit

had to do it twice.... even then the engine fell off on landing, it was pretty rough, the plane design itself isn't bad. im just a horrible pilot...

anyway

should be "more heat insulators needed", "precision landing"

and freaking ***** im just 50 sec off the 40min mark >:(

it was design to be as low drag as possible, so it need to be fast to fly.(70m/s for takeoff, 200m/s minimum cruise speed @1000m).... thus the need for high speed at landing thus the reason it was rough and the engine broke off

update:

right

i forgot to tell the name.... i think i named it the 'C-Nagator'

Fly lower. With every kilometer of altitude you're adding six kilometers to your distance to travel. You should be fine flying this at 40-45 km, pitching downwards and pulling your periapsis along in map view without escaping the atmosphere.

And you can try to put some struts between your tank and engine - put an I-beam in between, install struts, then remove the beam and stick the engine back.

OP updated with new records and new rules. Good job dalies and mentlegen!

Ohh, sorry. Mine is actually called the Spiderweb.

Thanks for the clarification on the rules. I think I will scratch my head for a bit and come up with a new flight profile. :)

Errr.. what? Kerbal engineer isn't an autopilot mod, it just displays information. (for me, the vertical speed indicator, as the MK3 cockpit doesn't have any instruments) That flight would have been a lot less...eventful if I was using an autopilot :D

  • 4 weeks later...

That's an fast build plane witch does it's job. No more, no less.

Name: Flash I

Partcount: 19

Mass: 5.48 t

Topspeed: 2459 m/s --> over Land: 2276 m/s

Time: 33.31 min

Javascript is disabled. View full album

BTW: I don't believe s.o. will do "Unefficient" or "Too low!" --> look at Coneshot's entry for the "Kerbin Circumnavigation Challenge - Reloaded"; it took him about 22.5 hours!

Ok, he did it twice, but that means 11.25 hours for a single circumnavigation.

@ Batz_10K: From the pictures it seems that you have to correct your landing gear. If the plane has a higher ground clearance (in your case) at the main landing gear than at the nose gear you can avoid sutch hazards during takeoff or landing.

So I built this not thinking about this challenge. Good thing I remembered this challange half way through my attempt. This is my first circumnavigation ever with a jet. Also overflew KSC by a lot:(. May have been under 40 min mark if I didn't. OH well, will try again when I have the time.

Name: Atlas Jet 31

Weight: 4.62 T

Parts: 16

Also think I got "Light Bugger", "See, saving the planet!", and "More Heat Insulator Needed"
