Introducing the Kessler I Orbital Experiment Platform

The Kessler I (fig. 9) is designed to lift a small Orbital Experiment Module into Kerbin orbit, which the manned Orbital Maneuvering Module can interact with during rendezvous experiments. The Orbital Experiment Module releases twelve beacons which increase visibility of the Orbital Experiment Module at long range.

General Information

The Kessler I Platform stands 16 meters tall (fig. 5, on launchpad) and is capable of lifting the Orbital Experiment System (fig. 10), which contains the Orbital Experiment Module (fig. 12, including blue-edged Mass Disks seen in fig. 10). After the cover panels are decoupled, the Visibility Beacons are released, the Orbital Experiment Module is decoupled, and the Maneuvering Module moves away to prepare for rendezvous exercises.

The Orbital Experiment Module is comprised of two 1m solid Heftium Mass Disks (blue, fig. 10 and 12), massing 4 units each. These disks are held apart by the Beacon bracket, which also contains various observation instruments.

Instructions For Use

Launch at throttle=50%, with SAS engaged.

Decouple solid rocket boosters at burnout.

Begin pitchover to heading=90 degrees at ~15km.

Pitch should meet 45 degrees from vertical at ~35km.

MECO when Apokee < 70km.

KOI burn at Ap.

Adjust orbit to suit.

Fire PLFs, release lifting stage.

Use RCS to make minor adjustments to orbit if needed.

Fire cover panels.

Release beacons.

Release Orbital Experiment Module.

Move away using RCS.

Begin rendezvous experiments.

Activate engines if needed and/or use for reentry.

During reentry, release Orbital Maneuvering Module from reentry vehicle.

At 10km, release heatshield and activate parachute.

Land.

Mission Accomplished!
