I`ve started a save with this as the first launch.

I`m going to launch at least ten of them. You spin them up and then fire off the action groups. Each launch will make about 300 pieces of debris. I`ll put the first one on a circular 80km equatorial orbit. The next will be 80x100, 80x250 and pretty much any orbit I think of until the whole sky is fast moving pieces of debris.

I`ve put one on a retrograde 80km orbit and one on a polar 80km orbit already.

When the sky is filled with more debris than can be counted then I will start my space program.

I`ll keep you posted (irregularly)

If anyone has an idea for an orbit, I can go to a max of 80x250

I think, yes, they will have to EVA for some reason more concerned with plot than physics.

I think you should put debris on inclined orbits as well, not just polar and retro.

I`ve put some on a 10 degree inclination but everything is so laggy now I`m not sure I can put much more up there.

How is that laggy? I don't think i've ever had frame-rates that high.

You don't need pieces that big. Chances to hit them are low already, a metre or to doesn't mean a thing. It is possible to launch hundreds of pieces at once, and it can be very compact.. Just use those small blue separators spaced radially, 8-fold symmetry. 64 of them per "floor", and then stack lots of such floors. Action grouping is a mess, but hey... It's compact.

I did a similar thing few days ago and I actually tried to EVA rendezvous with a small cubic strut.

The video is speeded up. I get about 3 frames per second playing with no active flights...

even with over 2000 pieces of debris I don`t think I`ll get hit by any soon.

The lag really isn`t worth it.

Watching that video and seeing bits of debris streak past at 4 km/s really unsettled me...
