Latus rectum is a fancy word for a simple line that joins the focii of any ellipse (or any conic section, really) to the curve, and is also parallel to another line called the directrix of the curve (which is another fancy word for another very simple line. Mathematicians love their fancy words) Surprisingly enough, semilatus rectum is the half of the length of this line :)

I enjoyed it... and that bit about floating point and programmers getting it wrong... I WAS ONE OF THEM. I messed up a certain program on a mainframe and I managed to nick all the CRU's for the whole country's network (CRU = Computer Resource Units). UK National Coal Board... IT WAS ME! (was in the 1980's so I bet they forgot now).

Yeah, I learned the probs with floating point math.
