Proposals and Projections: The future, as planned by the 1960's

Recommended Posts

This challenge may be one of the hardest I've seen. First, one must build a covering over a Kerbanaut with structural parts, and in some way deliver it to the Mun. Next, build two rockets, one a manned orbiter, the other a fuel tank. Rendezvous in orbit, and transfer fuel before landing upon the Mun. Continue by building a massive rocket that transports a second rocket to the Mun. Your final challenge is as follows: Build a manned Duna mission. Your ship must have radially attached fuel tanks, connected by fuel lines, that are able to be decoupled. It's main engines must be nuclear, but must be put into orbit by non nuclear engines. The lander may use chemical fuels, and ion engines are illegal. Its lander must be two stage After the mission, a chemically fueled rocket must bring your command module back to Kerbin.

Well, that's very specific for a challenge! Pretty sure they didn't plan a mars journey from the surface of the moon in the 60's, either... heh...

Further, all rockets are 'chemically fueled'; and I don't know why ion engines are 'illegal' for this challenge, as you need quite a few of them to get anywhere near the thrust of normal rockets...

Why build the structural structural covering around a kerbal, then leave him on the moon? what is he going to do with this spare rocket you send him?

This could all be done far easier with some better planning, and this will be a very hard challenge to judge, as you haven't set out the rules properly, there is no scoring system, and you are inviting ridiculously long, image-laden replies...

I feel quite hypocritical saying these things, as I have yet to come up with a challenge myself, but have a look through some of the other challenge posts and see how they are set out - most have a picture or two giving people the idea of what is wanted (Spacestation challenge, for example, says exactly what the challenger is wanting to see, and has a screenshot or two where they have tried the challenge out to see how possible it is).

This seems to be a great idea for a challenge, I just think you need to work out a few more things for it (as mentioned, some sort of scoring system, so you end up with a leaderboard or similar, so we can compare our results!).

Please, don't take this the wrong way, it's a good idea, just needs more shape to it :)

The covering of a Kerbanaut is based off of early space suit proposals that included heavy armor plating to defend against micrometeorites. The Duna mission is launched from earth as well. I will later edit this to include a scoring system. Also, these are all separate flights. Sorry for being unclear.

Fair enough, a bit more clarity is always good! Ah, the good old days, where the scientists of the time thought that Astronauts would face similar problems to deep sea divers! not sure that's replicable in KSP at this time, but very cool idea, which I don't think I've seen/heard yet...

Might be best to plan out rules and things on a bit of paper first, then try and do it yourself - that way you'll find out how hard it will be, and be able to work out some sort of scoring system off that :)
