The possibility of discovering asteroids around other celestial bodies

Recommended Posts

It has been the classic story of Squad that asteroids were discovered by astronomers on Kerbin locating the asteroids by long term evaluation. I would suggest that colonies/specialized probe should be allowed to locate asteroids near the planets on which they inhabit. With this update a science part very similar to a camera (for probes) or a telescope (for manned excursions).

Please feel free to add your own ideas

Generally, if an asteroid is orbiting a planet (as opposed to the sun) it is known as a moon. They're relatively easier to locate and catalog than things from the asteroid belt because you have a rather precise area in which to search for them.

I agree, it's cool to see asteroids that are going to encounter kerbin, but if you want one around Jool getting it there would be a pain. If we could send a probe to Jool that would let us see asteroids encountering it we could capture them instead.

I though the asteroid belt would be near Dres.

But, basically every planet has asteroids around them, like in real life on earth, they just aren't visible through the atmosphere.

So I agree that asteroids should be around every celestial body.

(But, what differentiates asteroids from moons is the size.)

Not really. What defines an asteroid is its orbit. This is oversimplified (since it doesn't cover things like comets), but... for an object of a certain size... if it orbits the sun, it's an asteroid. If it orbits a planet, it's a moon.

I'm well aware of how that classification works, I never mentioned the asteroids orbiting a planet.

So are you more or less asking for the ability to put tracking stations on other planets, thereby expanding the range of an asteroid-detection system?

Im asking for the ability for manned ships to track asteroids

How about this first though. A proper system for actually building and maintaining colonies (and giving them a purpose, one of which could be this asteroid tracking idea).

The exact words in the title are "around other celestial bodies".

What celestial bodies did you mean, then, if not planets. I don't understand what you're saying.

That's begging for an argument regarding semantics...

Are you asking for "The possibility of discovering asteroids from other celestial bodies"? or are you asking for "The possibility of discovering asteroids that are orbiting other celestial bodies"? Because if it's the first that title is confusing.

I think what was meant was, that asteroids orbiting in the vicinity of the orbits of other worlds, should be more easily detected from those worlds. And the only asteroids you can find near Kerbin... are the ones that come near Kerbin.

It's strictly a range-related thing between the detector and the asteroid. The orbit is irrelevant. I guess...

Of the two ways to interpret what you said, the one that you claimed to have "never said" is in fact the more obvious one. You can't really blame other people for failing to read your mind and guess you meant the less likely meaning. The reason you had to follow up what you said with further explanation was because of how you phrased it. For "around" to mean moving around something, rather than "near to" it, is the more obvious meaning. If you didn't mean that it's not other people's fault that they didn't read your mind to figure that out.

Seriously, what's with this pointless discussion.

If something is "around" something else, that doesn't mean it's orbiting it. Now I'm not a native English speaker, but, especially when taking the text in the first post into account, it's unambiguously clear to me what Skyler4856 means.

The KSC detects (= the game spawns) asteroids only near Kerbin currently.

He wants the ability to detect (= the game to spawn) asteroids near other celestial bodies too.

They don't orbit Kerbin, unless you actively change their trajectories.

They wouldn't orbit the other celestial bodies. (Unless etc.)

That said, that's also something I'd like to see.
