Capture an asteroid (without the claw)

Recommended Posts

This mission requires you to capture an asteroid without the claw. You will need to use landing legs, struts, metal trusses. Whatever floats your boat. Just don't use the CLAW! All you need to enter is the Screenshot of you launching your contraption, rendevousing with the asteroid in question, and you capturing the asteroid ( a picture of the debug menu will be required in these screenshots) There's only 2 rules: #1; No debug menu cheats, #2; no use of the claw that was added in( 0.23.5 . You begin with 100 points.(it used to be 50, but it was too small). Whoever gets the highest score with a succesfully captured asteroid will win. Scores will be determined by:

A) how many parts were in your capture craft? Less is better. For example; a capture craft with 500 parts (you'd need quite a beefy PC) would mean -50 points from your points that you begin with. Every 10 parts = -1 point. Ship parts are counted when the entire launch stage is jettesoned.

B) how big was the asteroid, and possibly, how many? A class asteroids are equal to 1 point each. B class=2 each. C class=4 each. D class=8 each. E class=10 each. (bravo sir if you manage to get 5 E classes without the claw)

c)How fast was your capture? every ksp year(365 earth days) = -12 points. 10 years = -120 points. So make haste in capturing that rock!

BONUS POINTS!)

Landing an asteroid with parachutes = +50 points because thats hard without the claw.

This done in career mode (genuinely) with science gathered = +75 because that's quite difficult.

Landing an asteroid back at the KSC = +60 points.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself and good luck!

P.S: If you have any suggestions on how to improve this or if you see any flaws with it, please share it with me. My last challenge was a complete sham. :D

Is it even possible?

It's certainly possible. It's been possible in previous versions to "shove" other ships with a properly designed pusher (struts, things with high impact tolerance, and a suitably slow boost). Check out any threads on debris-clearing, for example.

How do you win? Is there a scoring system eg. biggest asteroid recovered wins?
Hmm, how to score it... I'll put up the proper scoring system on the actual challenge, but the score will be defined by: 1:how big the asteroid,

and 2: how many parts(preferably less).

I'm noticing a problem here... the score system is very tough to make positive. A 70 part vessel taking a month to redirect a D-type asteroid will receive a score of exactly zero. If the parts are counted at launch, that isn't a lot.

Q1: What counts as captured asteroid?

Q2: How is capture time measured? Is it the ship time since launch?

Maybe you should try your challenge first and adjust your points system based on that experience. Because it does not seem to be very well balanced to me.
