why we play KSP

In all honesty I used to find modern spaceflight boring compared to the futuristic wonders portrayed in things like Star Trek. I thought it was cool that we had space travel and such but even though I'm a nerd in many ways, I didn't look for a deeper understanding of how things work in the real world, even though I knew on some level that it's not the same as in the fictional stories I love.

I suppose that's the coolest thing about KSP. It provides an easy gateway into the actual mechanics of spaceflight, and back when you're first learning the game and can barely achieve orbit (much less lift off the pad in one piece), you begin to truly see what a marvel it is that we managed to reach the moon, and make it back to tell the tale.

Now that I've played this game, reading about Apollo and the shuttle program has passed from something pretty neat but ultimately foreign to my mind, to being an utterly engrossing experience. Even though all I've done is throw virtual rockets around a fictional solar system, i understand the playing field now.

In summary, KSP has not only provided me some of the most satisfying accomplishments out of any game I've ever played, but it helped me better understand the real accomplishments of the human race. And I'm stoked to find out what we do next.
