Oh, god! Where do I even begin?

40 minutes till de-office and weekend. Have failed in chasing up a PS/2 mouse from coworkers or office. Will try tricks learned tonight; have own PS/2 being sent to house and due to arrive tuesday.

So MAYBE yet again I'll be up during my weekend haha.

*headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk* CRASH *headfloor*

#EDIT: Time's up! Well, here goes. Hopefully to a night with a quick fix, rather than two days of severe frustration and anger. Hope to get some Kerbaling in this weekend. Will post from new Whackputer if I can mouse again. If not... you'll see me here again in two more days.

Wish me luck! And stay tuned for the next installment in this dry and boring Whacksaga!

If only I could help you... Worst case scenario is that your USB controller get messed up by ESD, don't know if that's possible

So go find a PS/2 keyboard and mouse and do some dmesg, or try to connect your USB mouse directly to internal USB connector instead of the IO plate, probably the IO plate to motherboard connector is faulty

I'd suggest a control group test.

As in: bring the mouse to work, plug it in there. This will allow you to narrow down the issue: if it doesn't work, you computer is fine but the mouse is broken. If it works, the mouse is fine and ordering a new one won't fix the issue.

As for computer-side fixes I can think of... you said you hauled it back up on the desk, so I assume you have already done a full power cycle (that is, unplugging the power cord). If not, try that - give it half a minute and one or two presses of the power button before you plug the cable back in. Also: do you have a graphical BIOS with mouse support? If so, did the mouse work there before and now doesn't work there? Or does it continue to work in the BIOS and only Windows doesn't recognize it? Finally, try disabling any and all USB power saving options - some legacy hardware can't handle them and will randomly bork up. Had this with my old external HDD when I upgraded my computer, it would only work one out of five times. Until I disabled all USB energy saving modes, then suddenly it started working again 100% of the time.

Quick update: Down, but not yet out! Whackputer Mk2 is putting up a terrific fight, but her resolve is flagging!

#EDIT: I suspect a BIOS update I did didn't go right. I think that's the only thing that explains the USB ports suddenly not liking mice and headsets. They still like external hard drives and keyboards. Which is interesting. Going to try to redo the BIOS update.

#EDIT2: BIOS update did nothing. Still don't see the USB things. I am beginning to suspect this motherboard is faulty somehow.

#EDIT3: Forgot to mention how I've gotten this far. Picked up PS/2 mouse and keyboard.

I'm almost tempted to put a free copy of KSP down on it being the USB 3.0 drivers/sockets... :P

... except a quick looks shows the board does not have usb 3.0? Is that correct?

None on there, you are correct. All 2.0s per my documentation.

Have you tried resetting the bios back to defaults? Not re-flashing / re-upgrading, but resetting - through a jumper on the motherboard or pulling the little battery for 30s (while the computer is unplugged).

I think you need to get a new mouse :/

I find it's worth having a spare mouse just in case, even if it's a crappy wired 2 button job.

Edit:

You can't make things worse by opening the mouse and looking for bad wires at this point I expect, maybe you'll be able to get it working, got a soldering iron?

I'm using a 10 year old crappy Logitech mouse myself. Namely because every OTHER mouse I've purchased since 'retiring' the Logitech goes belly up. Corded mice... cords got damaged. Got a really expensive mouse whose manufacturer I forget... the guys that say to 'get imba' whatever the hell that means. Been through two of those crappers.

But only this Logitech seems to hold up over the years. Battery cover is gone... no idea where. So the batteries are held in place by a paper shim. Mouse wheel finally cracked a few months ago but it's STILL the only functioning mouse I have. It's uncanny to say the least. Goes through a ton of batteries because my brand new 'imba' rechargeable is a piece of crap. Should be in warranty but they want me to pay shipping to send it back and I just gave up on it. Probably try to repair it myself.

There was a point to this but it escapes me now. Something about my old faithful Logitech that I purchased during the Pleistocene era.

Doh. Yep, the tech nerd in me looked up your board to see that to be so. So a very strange result. Possibly Windows 8 related? Does the motherboard have EFI (or whatever) to check the mouse in, or as others said the linux Live CD? How did that go? If the mouse works in Linux, you will know it's Windows 8 at fault.

PS, will be building a massive (for me, but probably small fry compared to some) AMD rig this week... though not mine :,( , but will let you know how it runs KSP with hundreds of parts! :D
