zarakon
How about once your up to this speed could you detectch the wings as they are not as much use when you get high. Or maybe a whiteknight design?Getting to orbit, if it's possible at all, will almost certainly require multiple stages. It's possible that a final stage would ditch the wings, but with a maximum TWR of about 0.5 I don't think we've reached the point where that would work yet
totalitor
I made a slightly better altitude but I have to think something else. I try to keep minimum weight so my plane does not even have wheels. I left them on the ground like this. I try going west next time.
zarakon
Landing gear, like the small cubic struts, actually doesn't have any weight in the physics
Aghanim
Is FAR allowed?
ttnarg
In the end I did give this ago. My plan is to add a second smaller craft on top and let it go once high up. But not sure if it would work.Anyway this is my entry for for now.
zarakon
Sure, I could make separate leaderboards for FAR. I'm curious whether it makes this easier or harder
Tarantulae
My guess would be harder. Wings will stall out sooner and the TWR will hurt even more.

totalitor
28682 m and 1208 m/s. So the score is 2642.
zarakon
So ion engines don't get blocked by other engines attached directly behind them? Iiiinteresting. Veeery iiiiinteresting. Here's my latest attempt: Javascript is disabled. View full album33524m, 1430 m/s. I actually ended with both numbers a bit higher, but the screenshot just didn't take.I think if it's going to be possible, it will have to start off as a very large glider, with a lot of staging to maintain a TWR above 0.5 the whole way

totalitor
Nice vessels! Zarakon, wow! Two engines only? Gredinus, tree engines? I used four (don't know why).Good luck to reach orbit! I try improve tomorrow.
zarakon
I started with 3 engines, dropped one of them along with the first pair of xenon tanksGrenidus, are you able to post any more pictures of the craft or the flight? What you're showing there just doesn't seem possible. Are you using any mods, and are you sure you didn't use flapping control surfaces to gain speed?

Lou
Score = 1921: max orbital speed = 777 m/sec at an altitude of 22,880 mI gave a multistage ion glider a shot. I ran into a weird aerodynamics issue around 22,000m that forced me to fire the last stage earlier then I would have liked...
Tarantulae
I only used 1 engine and it was a SSTOAre you part clipping or something? I don't see how 2 swept wings, 4 small control surfaces and 1 engine can get as high/fast as you did without infiniglide.
zarakon
Yeah, I'd like some more details/proof on that flight. It's more than double what anyone else has done with a single engine, and it just doesn't seem possible
Lou
Score = 3085: max orbital speed = 1368 m/sec at an altitude of 34350 m.I made another multistage ion glider: not sure if multistage is better then SSTO, but it's fun for me. I was still gaining speed and altitude at 1368 m/sec and 34350 m, but I lost the sun.Click here for more images...
Redshift OTF
Best I can come up with so far.Massively infini-assisted but that happens when you use small control surfaces as wings. They are the best things to use though as they have the greatest lift to mass ratio of any wing surface.Edit: It is carrying a Kerbal though! zarakon
Sorry, the rules say no exploiting infiniglide, keep control surfaces to a minimum
