Solid Fuel Tank Idea

Recommended Posts

A separate solid fuel tank idea doesn't make much sense.. it's a solid, how can it transfer between tanks? I know this is a game and you can just set the resource flow mode to STACK_PRIORITY_SEARCH and transfer to PUMP, but you'd be making it do things that are impossible in real life. I know that most things in KSP are impossible in real life (and vice versa) but at a basic level, it has some degree of realism. Making a solid fuel transferable from a separate fuel tank is not something that's vaguely realistic. It's exactly the same if the solid fuel was wood - how would you get the wood from tank A into tank B? It just doesn't work..

It's completely possible with some cfg editing though. As I said, make solid fuel transferable and so that it searches the stack (exactly like liquid fuel) or ALL_VESSEL (like electric charge or the old monoprop) or STAGE_PRIORITY_FLOW (like the new monoprop) or whatever you want and make up a few tanks which contain the RESCOURCE - SolidFuel.

This doesn't make sense UNLESS inline solid fuel can all count as "one" rocket. But that's a stretch.

Current SRB'S could just vary more.

But building your own SRB isn't realistic or practical.

technically, this is how the shuttle SRBs were designed, segments of solid fuel all stacked on top of a nozzle, I don't think it was ever done in the Shuttle program, but they could be custom built with different amounts of segments. I think this idea would be awesome, TBH, it's more realistic then StretchySRBs. We'd just have to figure out how to set them to only crossfeed when stacked to another solid fuel segment or a nozzle.

I would like to see this. Specifically, I would like the ability to customize solid fuel stages by choosing the number (and/or size) of tank segments attached to the nozzle.

Under the current system, we can design our own liquid fueled rocket stages, but are limited to prepackaged boosters. Neither realism nor gameplay justifies that limitation.

I have been thinking about this for a while, and with the new SRBs in the ARM update, I think this would make sense.

There would also be the SRB nozzles as well.

Why not using the normal LHO tanks + engines??? They already work the way you want the SRB's to be.

Because he wan't SRB's. With the new contract and money system, they will probably be much cheaper than LFO's, as well as that it is for realism and completion. I make my own rocket fuel myself; and I certainly don't have just "three or four" sizes and thrusts I can make.

Well they are cheaper for an reason, making them as usefull as the LHO parts will make them more expensive too.
