Mission Control weather

Recommended Posts

I just had an idea that I would like to see in a future update to the mission control coming up in KSP .24. A I currently understand, they are adding a contract option in the mission control. What I think would be interesting is a weather prediction for a successful launch. For example, if there is a 40% chance of a successful launch due to weather, add a higher change the ship would fail then say a 90% chance of a successful launch. The visual cues could be turned off for less powerful machines and only display the percentage. What gave me the idea was watching the SpaceX attempt which is now delayed until Friday or Saturday.

I'm just trying to embellish your idea here, or provoke extra thought. I do like the idea of weather :)

What would cause the failure? Wind? Rain? Lightning? I can understand how these would make things a little more 'realistic'. What kind of weather prevents launches now? Surely a sprinkling of cloud wouldn't stop a launch?

There are some mods out there that do include extra terrestrial weather too like the recently showcased sandstorms on Duna. Perhaps when biomes become more widespread we will see something similar to this.

I can at least see clouds appearing to make a more picturesque Kerbin.

"Random failure" "chance" are generally frowned upon in KSP.

when/if weather effects are added your could instead just apply turbulence, rain, etc that the player would need to contend with. this way it would depend more on player skill rather than a random number generator hidden from the player.

This sounds better. If the wind was blowing and you could not compensate then it would be your fault really. Randomly blowing up due to a lightning strike would be horrible.
