K.J.P - Kollaboration of Joolian science - station/base/colonization [update re-post]

Well, I got sidetracked from my asteroid plans, here's what I've been quietly working on:

13986271767_ac70a5d095_o.png

The Leonardo, a mobile Kethane base for Bop and/or Pol. It's designed to fly about by hovering on the four ion-engine clusters and using the RCS thrusters for propulsion and braking. With two of the octogirder xenon tanks inside the Kerbodyne adapters, it's got several hours of flight time or about 12 thousand m/s of delta-V. As per the overall project goals it includes a science lab and all the vacuum science instruments except the materials bay (couldn't fit it anywhere that looked good, sorry).

Handles fine in orbit, but is something of an ocean liner under hover. I suppose it is a 90 ton ship after all. Doing forward movement by pitching turned out better than using the RCS. Note that the Rockomax 32 tank is empty, it's there to put the crew section further forward so the ship is balanced.

Now just got to launch it in the collab save. Including the antenna this time, and maybe adding more monopropellant and RCS thrusters. I'll also provide a transfer stage, it doesn't technically need one but I'm sure you'll appreciate a quicker burn.

I also made a smaller ship along the same lines, the Redgrave, but that has huge flaws and oversights and probably won't go in the collab, and a little scout craft, the Tenzing, which I crashed on landing but should work fine if you don't crash it.

Well, the Leonardo is complete and ready to head for Jool, so I'll hand over the save to the next participant.

The ship's listed as Fermi-Szilard in the game, which is the name of the transfer stage. We're a little over on part count I'm afraid at 324 parts, breaking down as 135 in the Leonardo proper, 32 in the Tenzing (the little scout craft), and 157 in the Fermi-Szilard.

Album with more pics including the odd mishap.

I'll put fuller info in the Google Doc shortly, but for now note that action group 5 toggles the transfer stage engines, and I suggest controlling from the RGU that's tucked in the middle of the 6 nuke cluster for the transfer burn. Should be about 4 1/2 thousand m/s of delta-V in the transfer stage, enough to make Jool without needing to aerobrake.

PS: Also got three asteroids tracked that I consider candidates for hauling over to Jool, but never got round to making the tug for them.

Sure. Welcome aboard Super! I'll be putting you in rotation, bit expect not to have anything for a week or two though :P. If you haven't seen the Google doc, that's the place where everything is updated. Happy flying until then!

Looks like Cantab is done? In that case, everyone start messaging captain sierra I think his PM box is full.

I just got back from a Camping trip near mt saint Helenes (interesting as it exploded 34 years from today). Sierra you are on (if you get this). Cantab is done for his shift.

For anyone not checking it (heck, I hadn't until just now), I see Sierra's been commenting in the Google Doc.

As you may know, the new NFP has come out. So long as nobody's used hydrogen tanks or engines we could switch to it, though we can't use the optional LV-N reconfiguration. The PB-ION nerf may break the Tenzing, but that's only a diddy little thing and we can still use it for a crew shuttle in orbit. Or dock a science package to it and throw it into Jool. I don't think the new version changes any other parts but it probably wants checking.

In any case, it's obviously best to make a decision sooner rather than later.

I think it fixes the interior of service capsule, which was broken.

Anyway, I'd implement MechJeb as it stands, because it's just one part, absolutely no impact on the gameplay (No crash detection etc.)

Hey guys! I've started my project, the Isis Laythe Station. It will be a way-point for Laythe surface-orbit operations. Just launched the transfer vehicle, Antares, modules should be done tomorrow, as well as updated persistence.

The main reason not to use the MechJeb part is using it would mean making MechJeb an obligatory mod. Better for those who want it to just use a module manager cfg to get the functionality in the regular command pods, which would still be needed anyway for ships that have been built without the part. Same goes for Engineer Redux if you want to use that.

Monoprop, looking forward to seeing more of the station.

Isis Laythe Space Station

I'm starting a space station around Laythe, used as a fuel depot and a waypoint for Laythe-bound operations. It's built onto the Antares transfer vehicle, which serves as both the propulsion segment and the core of the station. Two habitation modules give 8 crew capacity, along with two empty tanks that can be filled up once the destination has been reached. Also, there is a science lab for processing data. There are 2 senior ports and 7 standard ports available to dock to.

It's got 4.8 km/s of delta-V and 3 crew. Ready to go once the next window arrives (44 days).

I'm going to launch my kethane rig in some time to orbit, it's currently WIP. The version you see was hyperedited there to see if it works.

And i also request to finish my work ASAP (preferably this week), launching to Vall at the next launch window and establishing the settlement there. I'm quite flooded with work (what's up with all these kidney failures), and I am not sure if I can finish the project then.

That looks immeasurably cool. And finishing this week it totally good. Just grab the save, add it, and re-upload and your good. I'll be trying to launch my Laythe plane soon after you I think.

-_-

ABOUT THE NEW NFP. I'd be more than happy to change - especially as the pod now has a detailed IVA. Idk if/how many of the old parts it replaces though.

Hello guys, I am sorry, I have to withdraw from the project, since I won't have time for KSP through next few years. My fiancée is pregnant, so I'm going to be a father soon, and also I have to mind my real-life career more than KSP.

So: It was a pleasure to work with you.

Well, good luck being a dad! And you're naming the baby Jebediah, right? ;)

If it's not on the save already, then if you get the chance to upload the craft file for your Kethane rig that would be great.

I am sorry for being off the ball but it looks like all of you are done with this too :). Best of luck (though I'm sure you won't read this)! I've got an adopted 3 year old in my family and boy is he awesome :). Please message me if any of you want to join the Kerbin cup. I plan to continue it with Scriptkitt3h after the main challenges are over. See you all around the forum.
