6 KM or higher locaitons on Eve?

Recommended Posts

Over a year ago, I made a number of different Eve Landers, some for a mission and some of the old SEAV Challenge.

For the SEAV challenge, I used a location that was over 6 km high.

I did those in .18 and a bit in .19

Today, I tried a new lander in .23, to the same Eve coordinates, only to find that what used to be a mostly flat-ish plateau, is now an area of high steep mountains and slopes, my old location being about 4600 meters on a slope too steep to land on.

It seems Eve for a terrain make-over between .19 and .23

So, can anyone recommend some 6 km or higher coordinates on Eve? Preferably an area that's not like trying to land on the tip of a mountain.

Back in July 2013 I was searching for launch sites on Eve (after the 0.21 changes to the surface). My old moderate-elevation site got nerved down into the 2000-something meter range. Also, they dried up almost all the lakes around my landing site. Here are a few mountain tops near my old landing site (with elevations noted in thousands of meters).

I also checked out a higher site to the east (the highest one I could find near the equator). It's here:

And it's not just a single peak…but it's not a large plateau either. Maybe it will work for you.

I decided to play with Kerbalmaps a little (the Eve height map is not very useful in its default form). Apparently there are large areas above 3000 m but very small number of places above 6000. Click on the image for full resolution.

Yeah, the high-altitude plateaus appear to no longer be a thing.

There are still many moderately high places to land. My main goal on my last landing was to get something "good enough" near the equator. So I landed here:

I missed the hill, but it was a little more level where I ended up, so that's OK. Altitude 5.75 km, at 0° 36' 53" S x 167° 47' 17" E

Thanks for the info on a place to land. I used Brotoro's coordinates and found a little bit better place on the same plateau, a bit over 6500 meters.

I made up a ship for the "Lightest Eve Lander" challenge, here:

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/76153-Lightest-Eve-Lander/page3

My ship is a bit more than a ton heavier in liftoff mode, than the lightest entry in the challenge, mine coming in at 31.87 ton ready for liftoff.

But it is currently the lightest as-landed, at 33.197 ton.

It later jettisons an assembly on top that has chutes and a small fuel tank to top-off lander tanks (during landing the engines fire the last 10-15 meters to cushion the landing).
