Which one is more efficient?

Recommended Posts

Im currently orbiting Eve in a highly eccentric orbit, AP 57901 km, PP 123,116 m

Its in such a direction that I am forced to go deeper in the solar system if I use the Olberth Effect and burn at periapsis which only takes 53 m/s dv to escape.

I only have 3 km dv remaining

Should I burn at apoapsis to escape and instead go outward initially?

Or should I use the olberth effect and burn at periapsis, then bring my periapsis down close to the sun and use the effect again to bring myself to Kerbin orbit?

I think that the best course of action would be to play around with the maneuver nodes, testing different burn lengths at different times, and NEVER be afraid to set a burn to go wider than Kerbin's orbit, because it might just be the course that brings you home.

In any case, always remember that the smallest orbit has the fastest orbital period. If Kerbin is ahead of you, small orbit. Behind, larger orbit!

You have several options:

1/ wait in orbit till your periapsis burn will send you in the right direction (play with + / - buttons on maneuver node which appear after you have right-clicked on the maneuver to add/remove orbits from the burn)

2/ if your orbit is sending you in exactly the opposite direction, reverse the orbit at apoapsis (that should only need a little dv) and burn at periapsis in the right direction

3/ burn at periapsis to get an escape which will get you another intercept with Eve, and use that intercept to get a slingshot in the right direction

With such orbit and still 3 km/s available, even escape from apoapsis should not be a problem. In such case I'd recommend raising the apoapsis to the very edge of the SOI from periapsis first.
