How to scan for kethane while not controlling the ship?

I have simulate in background turned on.

Why are my other satellites over duna not scanning, How can I turn on a setting or something so it can scan while im controlling another satellite or ship?

I ran into similar problems. I think that it can only be done by the active probe. However, with a polar orbit, you will eventually scan the entire planet. Is that what kind of orbit you're using?
