Firespitter: Electric/Nuclear SSTO

Recommended Posts

The rules:

1. The only propulsion allowed is LV-N Atomic Rocket Motors and Firespitter electric propellers.

2. No dropping parts while in flight.

3. Takeoff from the KSC runway or launchpad.

4. Some control surfaces are OK, but no infinigliders or "winglet" parts.

5. Craft must have <400 parts.

Score is ∆V remaining once in orbit.

Can ions be used as well if you want to do it stock? Because I've been trying to develop an eve ssto that goes along the lines of electric-nuke combo that takes advantage of the atmosphere, but I'm terrible at building planes.

There's already a challenge thread with people flying ion only SSTOs.

An Eve SSTO is probably impossible, but feel free to try a Firespitter/nuke/ion Eve SSTO if you want. Major kudos will be yours if you succeed.

Considering that props are nearly useless at supersonic speeds, this challenge basically requires us to achieve orbital velocity on pure nuclear power at a low enough altitude to get air.

I have my doubts, but I may try it later.

I have an X-Wing somewhere on this forum that does SSTMun (with return) on one lot of fuel and a runway takeoff. And a sub-5t SSTO spaceplane that does much the same thing, but that does need a refuel from Munar orbit on arrival. Both stock except they have MechJeb, Luvodicus Super Nukes and Parom monoprop tanks.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
