Dark Matter the new nemesis in the Nemesis Theory? Discuss

Saw this

"Dark matter 'slingshot' could send lethal asteroids crashing into Earth"

You may want to read this is about the Nemesis Theory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemesis_(hypothetical_star)

And yea I linked FOX to spice it up :)

The delta V requirements would be silly.

More likely the plane of dark mass is the net ejected material of all the stars of the galactic disks- that is, rogue planets, escaped asteroids, and other bodies with no star to illuminate them. that would be the source of the impacters.

Well I beleive it is widely accepted that minor gravity pertubations can seriously disturb the orbits of asteroids in the asteroid belt and comets in the oort cloud. Not much deltaV is needed to make the objects slingshot around their neighbors and simply increase the probability of obects falling towards the sun.

I dont think your explanation of dark matter is concurrent with the current definition.

Yea... Pretty sure this theory was devised in order for some poor sap to keep getting funding.. I kind of doubt that we have what would almost equate to a mini black hole or gas giant worth of mass mucking about our star undetected.... And even if it was there wouldn't it be likely that it would have at least managed to clear its orbit up for the most part??

I guess most people still do not understand how empty space really is. When they hear "Oort Cloud" or "Kuiper Belt" they imagine Star Wars-esque dense mess of floating rocks. They do not understand how rare and distant are "close passes" in these regions of Solar system. And over billions of years what could be gravitationally perturbed already was (for the most part), and remaining obiects are mostly in various orbital resonances ensuring their orbits remain stable (for the most part :))

Yeah, and new Cosmos doesn't help with that. :/

I know, right? In the Oort cloud an object's nearest neighbor could be over 1 AU away!
