Mun Redirect... wait what?

So with the introduction of Asteroid Redirect mission I had this idea.... Jeb and I were flying to the Mun together, chatting away, when Jeb commented on how much the Mun looks like an over sized asteroid we redirected days earlier...

Then I thought.. Huh.. I wonder if its possible too redirect the Mun, or other small Muns... Or at least, alter their path slightly... Anyone try this? I don't have the technical ability to build a ship capable of attempting this...

On the off change this isn't a troll.

Its impossible, as all planetary bodies is in on-rail orbits, meaning they can't be changed. Asteroids are basically just a part procedurally generated in space

Also, even if the planets weren't on rails, it would be impossible. I believe Scott Manley made a video talking about what mind boggling amounts of fuel that would be needed to move something "tiny" (I believe he used Gilly as his example).

This was brought up a while ago on Scott Manley's youtube channel. It would take so much time, fuel, and parts to move one that it would not be possible; even if it were not on rails to being with. Here you go.

1. The game doesn't allow it

2. To affect even the smallest moon by 1 m/s would require an absurd amount of effort. Maybe all of the rockets ever built by all KSP players combined could do something, but not much.

There is no data for planetary positions in a save file. That should be sufficient to show that the planets are on-rails with their positions determined solely by the in-game time and date and their predefined orbits.

Further, Asteroids are technically ship-parts called 'potatoroids' - meaning the claw can connect to them, and this is the biggest bit - the claw will not connect to a planetary surface... so no way to connect, you may as well build a masive upside-down rocket to try and 'push' the planet/moon!

But still... it is not completely impossible in theory :)

In the game, actually it is, since the planets are on rails. Even if you modded an engine to have a trillion kN thrust and 100,000,000 seconds specific impulse, it still wouldn't do anything.

The Mun???

For starters you should practice on something easier, like redirecting a Gilly!

But if planets/moons were in fact move-able, I'd redirect Kerbin to an elliptical orbit - periapsis below Moho and apoapsis above Eeloo O_O

To do that, the rocket motor would probably need to suck out Kerbin's entire core and mantle... x^D making it just an empty low-gravity cold shell...
