Cursed Places

Laythe has a bad habit of eating my jool missions if the first aerobrake isn't deep enough...last time my lander came down right smack dab in the middle of that huge ocean..no land for a thousand miles in any direction, sigh. That rescue mission is going to suck.

D: ah! Sounds like a job for Jeb.

Unless he's the one in the ocean...

Eve. Eve hates me. I play with FAR and deadly reentry, and it is unbelievably hard to design a craft that will get to Eve, park in orbit, deploy a lander (with a huge heat shield), shed orbital velocity without burning up (and hold the right orientation stably enough not to wobble any crucial parts into the fiery death), land safely and stay upright on those godawful sand dunes (everywhere on that planet seems to be on some sort of slope!), and then still have enough delta-v to punch through the atmosphere, make orbit, and get home.

My most recent mission, I got there with an absolute monstrosity, landed it (just about) upright, took a sample and a photo, then found that, in spite of extensive successful testing on Kerbin, the ascent vehicle was unstable in Eve's thicker atmosphere, and would just tumble out of control when I tried to take off. Devastating!

I've abandoned it for a grand unmanned RT2 tour of the Joolian moons now. Just launching a beast of a communications array so I can set up a network of commsats around Jool. I wonder what new disasters I'll manage this time

I haven't so far dared to install FAR or deadly reentry. I think my unconventional flying skills would result in lots of MIA Kerbals if I did...

Gilly. The place where you burn down to land.

Since I ran out of RCS and I don't trust my engines with small course corrections, I'm probably gonna skip the whole landing part and EVA down to the surface. This way I can burn up and down without having to maneuver my ship. :P

EDIT: Finally lost my patience and followed your advice. I probably shaved off half an hour by performing a totally unnecessary and inefficient maneuver, but it was totally worth it :D

My cursed place is Sentar from Planet Factory. The entire system. I've sent two missions there, both of which failed.

First mission, Explorer IV, unmanned probe "mothership." After a successful aerobraking, the main uranium nitride reactor ran out of fuel, so I had to rely on the deployable probes' reactors. After getting into a stable orbit, I deployed three of the four probes. The first one was supposed to dive into Erin's atmosphere, get into a high orbit, then land on Pock. It suffered a structural failure during the descent and I had to crash-land it. The power supply was adequate, but somehow all equipment was rendered inoperable. The second one's extendable radiators were damaged during deployment, resulting in an emergency reactor shutdown, and subsequent power failure. The third probe was meant to dive into Sentar's very core for an atmosphere analysis. Although the data was transferred without failure, it was deleted shortly after reading the tapes, when [DATA CORRUPTED], resulting in ██ casualties. Scientists involved are still unwilling or unable to speak of the event. The Explorer missions were discontinued shortly after.

The second mission was conducted with a manned spacecraft. The transfer burn was completed with exceptional accuracy, but during the insertion burn, the main VASIMR engine exploded. An emergency disassembly was performed, removing all excess weight and the damaged part, and putting the backup engines to work. The crew safely returned to Kerbin.

Yes. It's the only way to go. Unless you have superhuman patience.

Having to wait 90 minutes to get near the ground for a 10m/s burn is not patience, it's annoying. I'm not going to Gilly again in a long time.

I'm so done with Eve. Now, after all of the stuff I described in the previous post, I now had a Kerbal become a Base after exiting a Command Seat, then 2 became debris after falling out of command seats, and one Kerbal fused with the Ship and became a Part of it after getting knocked around in a Command Seat. (I used Whack a Kerbal to make him debris, rest was solved with save file editing) Bugs that I have not encountered before suddenly just happen on Eve. That purple piece of garbage...
