Mun parts Challenge

Recommended Posts

So heres a little challenge, using the smallest amount of parts possible and only stock parts, build a ship to take off, land, and return from the moon safely. No mods allowed Except for Mechjeb and Engineer for Calculations and stuff like that.

Leaderboard

Aphobius - 4 parts (the landings are on the Neil Armstrong Memorial and on the helipad)

vinsent10 -

I've added this leaderboard since it looks like the OP is not between us anymore. :( But if he's coming back and wanna add it himself, I'll remove mine.

Old post:

It's not made especially for this challenge, but here it is.

15 parts, including 4 struts (I don't know if you want to include struts as parts or not).

Do I get a bonus for doing it in 2 minutes and 8 seconds? =))

7 hours is not 2 minutes

Just a note that most that took the Minotaur 5 challenge have a craft that, with the addition of a parachute, can easily complete the mission. The 10 part challenge ship is also fully capable of the mission. One should be able to do it with six parts from that successful design. (Part six is a parachute.) Five parts may be possible.

Not an entry but an example. This design landed on Duna, Eve, and Laythe. (10 parts) A Mun or Minmus landing and return would be an easy mission.

Lander legs not required even on a slope. (LADEE Probe landed on Mun with enough fuel for a return but not a safe one.)

7 hours ingame, due to timewarping that's reduced to 2 minutes real time ;)
No you can't reduce mission time. And getting extra points for low time spent in game really is fuzzy.I mean do you have proof that you made it in that time?

I think Aphobius was kidding about the bonus, see the smiley after his statement? He just happened to have a low part-count craft capable of the mission the OP stated that he made for his challenge to do the same in as little real life time as possible.

I prepare a new entry for this challenge, it's going to be a big surprise. =)) Now I'm not home, but probably tomorrow I'll post it.

You don't look like a bright fellow. You can just divide the game time by the time warp multiplier (mostly the 4x parts) and compare it with a real clock. What more proof than that do you want?

Now the real thing that needs a proof is if YOU can get to the Mun and back at all, because I can't see your entry, but only you being offtopic and making a fool of yourself.

Okay.sounds interesting.I'm not really that good with building efficent rockets but i shall try my best.

Well, I put together a five-part design, but haven't been able to pull off the landing.

The ship's more than capable of the mission, my problems are two-fold. Firstly the finite electricity supply, that forced an abort of my first landing attempt. Secondly my lack of piloting skills. I managed two touch-and-goes (ie the ship touches the ground then immediately lifts off, no flag planting), but my panicked takeoffs put me on a Kerbin escape trajectory first time and slamming into the Mun's surface due to misreading the navball second time., and another touch-and-go followed by a crash because I didn't read the navball properly. Right now I feel discinclined to try again, frankly I had my fill of poorly-controllable ships long ago.

I looked at a design like yours Aphobious, but for some reason I didn't think of using the nuclear engine, and it didn't look like I'd get enough delta-V from a chemical one. Props for the lowest-part entry yet.

Now, can anyone do three parts?

Here's the surprise I was talking about. :)

Sorry again for the landing xD, if I would have tried it one more time probably I could have done it without breaking that fuel tank ... but it's kerbal after all. =))

EDIT: HAHAHA, now do I get a bonus vinsent? =)) =)) Joking. :) Well done for your entry, landing legs were not really needed, so it's almost like you did it with 7 parts.
