The Devil Wears Pink - land on as many bodies as possible in a single launch

Recommended Posts

While thinking about the concept of a grand tour challenge (land on and return from all the bodies in a single launch) which someone did recently on Reddit (with only a 75 ton launch vehicle, no less!) I was thinking about ways of adapting it to be a more point-based challenge. Therefore I've come up with the following system.

The challenge:

In a single launch, plant flags on as many bodies as possible and return every kerbal involved safely to Kerbin. Simple as that.

Scoring:

  • For each body a flag was planted on, take its ASL gravitational acceleration, in gs. If it has an atmosphere and you have DRE installed, multiply this by 1.5.
  • Multiply this by its radius.
  • Sum this product over all bodies a flag was planted on.
  • Divide this total by the mass on the launchpad.
  • Finally, multiply this number by any mod multipliers (described below) to get your score.

In order to prevent smartasses who make a single Mk1 Lander Can as their ship, Kerbin will not be considered a body for this challenge. Gas giants and stars, however, will, for the exceptionally crazy people out there. I've theorized the radiators from Real Fuels might be able to allow a safe landing on Kerbol. Probably not, though.

"Planet packs" are defined as mods which don't change the core mechanics of the game or add any new parts, but do modify the solar system. For instance, RSS, Alternis Kerbol, PlanetFactory, and any planet packs for PlanetFactory Creator's Edition are considered to be planet packs.

For people with planet packs, the same scoring will apply for those planets and moons. Entries will be split up between those which don't use any mods beyond data readouts (KER, VOID, that sort of stuff), planet packs, "convenience mods" (such as Kerbal Alarm Clock and TAC Fuel Balancer), and those which make the game harder (DRE, TAC, Remotetech, etc.), and those which do use mods beyond those. Both of these categories will be further subdivided into RSS and non-RSS, simply b/c RSS planets are so large compared to stock planets. What category a mod falls into will be defined by me, though I'll try to be relatively nice about this. Note that cheat mods such as Hyperedit and those which add engines with 99999 ISP are universally forbidden.

Some form of proof will be required for all entries; though I'll be a bit lenient about what constitutes "proof." Just don't be a dirty cheater.

Mod multipliers:

  • x0.9 for using Mechjeb's autopilot. This will also put you in the "softcore mods" category, though just using Mechjeb's readouts qualifies under data readouts.
  • x1.5 for using any life support mod on a mission which lasts longer than 7 days.
  • x1.2 for using FAR with aerodynamic failures enabled

As an example, I have the following example entry (obviously an exceptionally poor one):

Javascript is disabled. View full album

This would score 200 km * .166 g = 33.2 for the Mun plus 60 km * .05 g = 3 for Minmus, for a total of 36.2. Divide that by 520.391 tons to get a total score of about 0.07.

Okay, now for the listings.

Q&A

Q: Why the barmily spiffing christ almighty did you pick that name?

A: No idea. I regret it now, but apparently can't change it. And you're obviously American.

Q: Why does this challenge suck so much?

A: I'm new to this whole "coming up with challenges" thing. I'll take the fact that this one sucks into account.

Q: Why is your example entry so atrociously horrid?

A: I'm planning to make one less atrociously horrid soon.

Any other important questions I'll answer right here.
