Kerbal Space Center Defense

Recommended Posts

Okay, so this is the challenge.

A force of renegade clones of Jeb have invaded the KSC, capturing all the buildings EXCEPT the astronaut complex, where the Kerbonauts are still holding out. However, they decided they needed to make a breakout and destroy the Jeb-Clones once and for all, so you have to take your favorite plane and DESTROY EVERYTHING! (More or less.)

RULES:

You cannot bomb the Astronaut Complex. If you do, you will be disqualified.

Any and all mods are allowed,(EXCEPT HYPEREDIT) but there is a maximum part count of 250 parts.

Time limit is in place! Gene can only hold the rest of the KSC for so long, so you have five minutes.

You have to land your Kerbal in the plane back at the KSC once you expend your ordnance, but unmanned planes are allowed.

It must be a plane you use.

POINT COUNT

Every minute you expend, 2 points will be deducted.

Hitting the VAB is worth 50 pts.

Hitting the Tracking Center is worth 40 pts.

Hitting the SPH is worth 60 pts.

Hitting the R&D building is worth 40 pts.

Hitting Mission Control is worth 75 points.

If you hit EXACTLY on the control tower in the SPH, you get a 10 pt bonus. If you hit the exact center of the VAB tower, you get a 5 point bonus. If you hit the center building in the Tracking Station, you get a six pt bonus. If you hit the bridge in the R&D complex, you get a 15 pt bonus.

Hitting the Launchpad and Runway aren't worth any points.

For every part lost from your plane, whether it be wing, control surface, or engine, will deduct 20 pts.

If you do not return your Kerbal alive to the KSC (if you're flying manned) 25 points will be deducted.

Good luck, all those people out there reading this!

LEADERBOARD

#1: Hodo; 267 POINTS

#2: Darren9; 56 pts.

#3: Cmdr. Arn1e; 52 pts.

Honorable Mentions

Runner-Up 1: ihtoit; 42 pts.

hmmm... ok, so launch-deploy-land. Doable, even with my behemoth of a bomber. Is it really time critical though? Thing turns like a tanker (which it also doubles as), so every turn pass is gonna take at LEAST a minute.

This thing has a larger total payload capacity than a B52!:

1614359_410534792415857_1135252582_o.jpg

6 tons inboard (in this case, LFO tanks)

6 AMRAAMs

6 cluster munitions (in this case, LF droptanks)

Belly flare:

She will cruise at 1000m/s level at 27km and try and keep climbing, recover from a flat spin from 36km and land empty on four engines:

Haven't done a KSC bomb run with it yet though, if I can find the model file I'll give it a go.

EDIT: couldn't find the model, so built another one and loaded it with just 9 small LFO tanks in the bay. Handles like a piano! Managed to make one run at Mission Control before I gave up trying to make the thing turn, 6 of 9 right down the pickle barrel.

Hmmm, might see if I can get the right angle of attack so my guided bombs on my only current fighter (Mig-19) can get the SPH and VAB...

Thing handles like a dream, but is only small and has a payload of 2 guided 'bombs'...

EDIT 1: Incredible fun! pics to follow...

EDIT 2; The Entry!

So, as I mentioned, my little weaponised Mig-19 only has 2 bombs/missiles, so I tried to make them count by going for the highest scoring targets (SPH and VAB) on a single run... had to get the angle of attack right, or I'd miss one or the other... In the end, I *think* I only got the SPH...

and safely parked in front of the re-captured SPH... as clock shows, 4 minutes 2 seconds

Will be having another go at this, might adapt the Mig a bit to see if it can carry more (or alternative) payload... Thanks for the fun challenge :D

Does it have to be bombs, and is there a minimum size to a weapon? I quite like sepratron powered mini rockets but they aren't going to take a building out :)

I don't think anything will actually take the buildings out, but I think the challenge is to be able to hit the buildings at all, and (suggestion for OP) maybe dead-on target shots should earn some sort of bonus?

Grats! You got 42 points! Nice bomber, by the way. Always have been a B9 fan.

Thanks :) that's not the largest I've ever managed to get off the runway, I have a biplane version as well which is about twice the length and uses the HL fuselage set, I'm trying to build something which can take pretty much anything that can fit in the entirely enclosed cargo space to a suborbital trajectory with Pe>70km (you got it, so I can do an air-launched orbital firing) but I've got two dozen engines on it now to lift it without cargo.

I had a go with two missiles strapped to a spaceplane. I'm not sure how the scoring works, I've got controlled missiles so I had to fire one at a time and make two passes. Do I get (2x60) - (2x2) or should I of gone for a lower scoring target with the second? Can i fly around with a plane carrying 10 missiles, fire them all individually and have them score?

spaceplanes...!? I have one on an old save with eight rocket-powered missiles mounted on the leading edges of the wings, should make for a fine (if obscenely fast) aerial gunship... here's a photo of it docked on an orbital anchorage with Lerman Kerman (the Poet) have a buzz around:

if I can find it, I'll deorbit it and give it a run.

Okay, okay! Never expected this challenge would be so popular.......

Darren: Only the FIRST PIECE of ordnance that hits the building counts.

Also Darren: Rockets, missiles, bombs, you name it, I'll accept it. But the minimum parts count for the ordnance is 3. I don't want someone claiming they win because they dropped a single Sepratron on the VAB.

Arn1e: Yes, I will be inputting a system for that. Basically, if you hit EXACTLY on the control tower in the SPH, you get a 10 pt bonus. If you hit the exact center of the VAB tower, you get a 5 point bonus. If you hit the center building in the Tracking Station, you get a six pt bonus. If you hit the bridge in the R&D complex, you get a 15 pt bonus.

New scores are up on the leaderboard!

ooh, second! :D

not bad for my little Mig... but I went ahead and strapped a couple more missiles/bombs on each side (can't be bothered faffing with weight balance issues) so having 4 bombs/missiles only lets me 'fire' twice, but I think if I get the right angle of attack I could hit more than 2 targets

Watch this space!

Sorry, been pushing ahead on the Jool-5 mission with a vengeance! Also why I haven't updated the mission log for it yet... but this was the most fun quick challenge I've done so far, I'm really surprised it hasn't drawn more attention from the builders who love their military vehicles!

Wonder if it might be worth opening it up to be able to use tanks too? hmmm, maybe not, it might be less of a challenge for those who already have tanks!

I went out barnstorming with old man Jeb in the Firespitter Bi-plane outfitted with 6 "twister" sepratron missiles. Fired five on the five buildings including a hit on the SHP control tower and landed in 1 min 35 seconds. The "Improved Chase Camera" mod is very entertaining. Could be 75+40+40+60+60-(2x1)+(10) = 283.

Love the run, I have to ask about the rockets, what mods were used in making those? I have been looking for a smaller rocket design outside of using my standard stretchy tank SRB rockets.

they'd be doable with stock, just build the basic model and save it as a subassembly

Thanks, I've got the smallest control surface from Taverio-s-Pizza-and-Aerospace, structural parts from MSI-s-Infernal-Robotics-Model-Rework and the decoupler from Procedural-Parts. The twist does actually make them a bit more stable.
