How do you make your colonies?

I usually land a Command Module, with space for about 12-16 kerbs, then some residential modules, then maybe a control tower. Often depends on the gravity and atmosphere (If any).

I once tried making a base on the Minmus Great Flats (one of the best places for making a base), but I postponed the project because my Skycrane didn't manage to drop the modules without breaking some parts. I guess I'll try again when I unlock more pieces and can use the big wheels to make mobile bases
