Single-purpose fuel tanks

Recommended Posts

Let's say you take an orange tank and you empty the oxidizer. The amount of Liquid fuel you can store is the same. What I'm suggesting is to make it so when you empty a tank from Oxidizer, you can fill it with more liquid fuel to take the place of the oxidiser. Also, Scott Manley once said that we will be able to use orange tanks for all kinds of fuel-Xenon gas, RCS fuel, which is not in the game yet. That should be added too, in my opinion.

It would be nice to see in the base game, certainly, if only to significantly reduce part bloat. Why have three different parts with the same model when you can have one that is tweakable to have the functionality (and even textures) of all the originals?

Until then, have you seen the Modular Fuel Tanks mod? That might be what you're looking for. However, there hasn't been any widespread adoption of it by modders, unlike Module Manager, for example.

Scott is not a KSP developer, so while he can say these things it does not mean they will happen, sorry.

Also, real rockets are split into separate fuel and oxidiser tanks, you can't really put fuel in the oxidiser tank or vice versa as they are not designed for it, the sizes are different, pressurisation systems and plumbing differ, some are insulated depending on the contents.

If you want just fuel you need the aircraft fuselages, what you need here is plain oxidiser tanks.

Yeah, I thought about that. I'm not sure how to go around that.

What if I need an orange tank-worth of RCS fuel? Anyways, I know that Scott isn't a KSP developer but he seems to know more about the game's development than I do. Also, if real life fuel tanks don't work like that that will make the game non-realistic (which I don't want).

Actually, rocket tanks drained of oxidizer are quite weight-efficient as it is:

white fuel-only barrels: 150 fuel 1100kg
FLT-400 tank sans oxidizer: 180 fuel 1150kg
black-belly fuselage: 160 fuel 1000kg

In the game as it is, I just see no need for oxidizer-only tanks.

Then you need to take a step back and consider what the hell you are doing. And then just shove a bunch of the current biggest RCS tanks on.
