When is it too much?

I have recently succumbed to mods. I had sworn I would never download any... and then this happened.

Mostly they are just aesthetic or useful tidbits, but a few add things that are most definitely not in the game, like SCANSat.

(in fact, SCANSat and whichever one 6S uses are the only ones that adds extra parts of any significance. The Firespitter folder I have is for some mod or another that would use Firespitter, I don't know which one exactly.)

Who else has had this happen?

Aaaaaaand that's the reason I don't play mods! All they do is add stuph that you never use just to make KSP slower....

I still respect the time they take to make them.

Okay, two things.

1 - My KSP runs slow on my computer anyways, so I'm not losing much. I found ways around it.

2 - I use everything that I download. Aesthetics is very important to me, much more than saving weight.

And it doesn't matter anyways whether one plays with mods or not. It is their own opinion.

But this is getting off-topic: I started this thread to see who has gotten sucked into massive KSP GameData directories, not to set off a classic MechJeb vs. Normal Jeb argument.

Please, let's refrain from pointy fingers.

Can you do pointy fingers and air quotes at the same time or would you need a mod for that?

I was mostly stock too until recently when I decided I wanted a shuttle and some beautification mods an stuff. Then the gamedata folder got pretty big.

*decides to play stock*

*OOH I NEED THAT MOD!*

*2 Months later*

>>snip<<

To be fair, I haven't installed my usual AEIS+NP+KW pack, so I'm doing well! Ish.

Wow, I thought I had quite a lot of mods (currently hovering around 20). What's interesting is there are mods I've never even heard of in there (see ForceIVA, BurnTogether, etc...) and I spend a lot of time just perusing mods. Might have to check out at least ForceIVA (link would be helpful)

I think the point of adding mods is, indeed, to add stuff you do intend to use.

I have found these to be all I need....until .24 hits and I start my new series. Mechjeb was just removed and I think protractor might be going soon as well, and no I will not put engineer in this folder.

I can't bring myself to use part mods, typically, which are the vast majority of mods out there, so I'm usually running pretty light. I'm a stickler for proper balancing against stock parts, and I just don't trust modders to be as OCD as I require in that regard, and frankly I don't need 50 more engines, all with the slightest gradient in performance differences. KSPX is an obvious exception to this rule.

But graphic-adding/altering mods I'm a sucker for. 8K and beyond for me. So when stuff like this is put out:

I buckle and need it.

I say that one has too many mods when the boot-up screen takes longer to load the mods than it does to load the SQUAD stuff. You can usually tell because I've noticed it tends to load mod folders before loading the SQUAD folder... I do my best to only have a few extra seconds spent loading up mods, tops, because I fear what I'd discover if I added up all the time I've ever spent staring at that loading screen.

Hmm normally when I fire up the game I go get some water or other beverage, so I do not know how long my startup time is honestly.

is mine. Pretty much all usability stuff, for parts I just have Kethane and NFP, both on account of joining the Jool collab. I like both (though I think Kethane's only really useful beyond Kerbin's SOI) but I still find myself shying away from their parts a bit. For example I'm loathe to put a battery from NFP on a ship that's otherwise going to be stock.

You can never have enough mods!

You only have too many when your computer explodes and dies in front of your crying eyes.

Ok maybe that's not a good philosophy to follow. What I do is I have different loadouts. Basically 3 copies of the game, one with mostly stock parts and visual addons, one with a lot of part mods, and one with difficult/realistic mods. It's quite fun, you can choose the one you're in the mood for playing. Active Texture Management is probably essential if you have high memory usage.

I run 43 mods or thereabouts. (always trimming what I don't find a use for, and going "OHHHH SHINY!!! Gotta try that! ) And of course my loading screen takes nearly as long as making a pot of coffee......So that's what it's used for. :)

When is too many mods. That's easy.

When your computer has a memory crash during the load screen.........
