When is it too much?

I am running at the moment 47 mods but I modify some of them. If they have fuel tanks I just delete the parts and use the procedural tanks instead with the appropriate texture. And I have also one folder where I keep some modified part from different mods that I use. In this folder there is also parts like the Leucome Engines that is no longer available to download but still works fine.

If I want I could use more mods but that is all I want at the moment.

Little info: I timed how long it take to load the game from the point where I clic on the launcher to the main menu screen. It take 4 minutes and 45 seconds.

Mods, aahm ... yes. I tryed several out in seperate installs, wanting to explore their benefits.

To cut it short:

When i want a special senario or for a challenge i use them, so they are mostly gamechangers (Kethane, life-support e.g.). What i don't like about them are the way overloaded parts-tables under the tabs in the VAB/SPH (especially with heavy mods like B9 or infernal robotics e.g. [The mods should really create their own tabs under a mods-menu.]) and the loading-times. Additional to that the "must" for looking for updates and then maybe forced to rebuild the spacecrafts.

That's the reason i play stock mostly - sometimes with mods witch are providing additional functions but no parts like: Docking port alignment indicator/persistant trails/additional IVA's for manned pods witch haven't one.

You know, I installed a linux mainly so I don't have that stupid 3.5GB limit. Last time I looked, KSP took about 6GB RAM because of the amount of mods I have installed. And about 5 minutes for initial loading.

Not with KSP, but I always have that problem when I try to play Skyrim.

It's a problem because Skyrim isn't that kind to people installing mods mid game. If you switch mods to often your save will start acting up and you have to start a new game for it to work properly.

Repeat every few weeks

And I'd spent half my game time looking at potential new mods to install

Some of my mods includes parts that I don't even use.

I don't delete them just because I used a part on *one* rocket and I'm too lazy to make the tiny modification.

Also, I fear that I used a part on a mod and I forgot about that.

I have somewhere between 50 and 60 mods. Would be significantly more if I could use more of my RAM. So, it's too much once you crash after 3 minutes of playing.

For a while I thought I'd only play stock, but then I decided to play with just a couple mods. Then it kept growing. There's a lot of mods that I'd like to add, but just don't want to have to go through the process of updating all the time (it already takes like an hour to check for updates for everything in my list). I'm in the mid 30s in number now. The game takes 2 minutes to load from my SSD, but I don't really get any lag. Scene changes are max 30 seconds.

I should add some more plugins, like Editor Extensions and Select Root. I prefer plugins to part mods (B9 and KW are my only primarily part based mods). I like mods that fix things that I think are wrong with stock KSP (aerodynamics, reentry heating, instant building of rockets, etc)

After you start writing mods yourself, you tend to appreciate mods more and fear them less, at least that's the case with me.

And this is why I keep my modlist at or below 10. Only my favorites ever make it on, as well as some toolbar mod that's required for Ferram Aerospace. Current top picks:

BoulderCo Clouds + Environmental Visual Enhancements (technically two, but the latter requires the former)

Kerbal Engineer Redux

Ferram Aerospace Research

Kerbal Attachment System

Procedural Fairings

Kethane

Even if you count the mandatory toolbar for FAR, that's still a sprightly 8 mods. Keep it limited to your bare essentials and you won't be overloaded with mods!
