Climb Every Mountain (Over 6000 meters) - Kerbin

Recommended Posts

The tallest peak on Kerbin is 6764 meters, 61 35 54 N 46 20 17 E. I'm sure I'm not the first to dub it Mount Keverest, in the Kimalayas.

On Earth we have the Eight Thousanders, that is, the 14 highest peaks in the world. I guess on Kerbin we have the Six Thousanders,

Somewhat to my surprise, there's one in the Kerbin Antarctic, 6559 meters at 74 24 1 S 377 33 52 W (i.e. 17 33 52 W) ----just 205 meters short of the tallest peak. I call it Mount Kinson, in Kantarctica. In the Mountains of Kadness (H.P. Lovecraft nod).

Anyone know of other Six Thousanders on Kerbin?

This sounds more like a discussion starter than a challenge - maybe reading the submission rules would help?

But this seems like a good idea for a challenge, maybe re-word it and add some sort of points system or leaderboard, but be sure to give it a go yourself first to see how easy or hard it is to do, and be sure to include rules so no-one can cheat!

easily worded challenge: plant a flag on Keverest.

(trivia: the relative speed of the Indian and Asian continental plates means that the Himalaya range is "growing" at a rate of two inches per year. This bit of useless information brought to you by Kerbal Kola - the people who also brought you beer milkshakes!)

Using kerbal maps, it looks like there are at least 10 peaks above 6,000m on Kerbin, though possibly several more simply because the map does not give the precise highest point of a mountain, just points nearby.

Ok, we'll make it more exclusive, the sixty-five-hundreder club.

Here's me planting a flag on the highest peak on Kerbin:

6764 meters, 61 35 54 N 46 20 17 E.

http://s22.photobucket.com/user/planettom/media/lj2014/kerbin-everestascent4_zpsd30ab287.jpg.html

Then I found this one in the Kerbin Antarctic (Though I didn't get a screenshot):

6559 meters at 74 24 1 S 377 33 52 W

(Why the program presents a coordinate like that 377 west, instead of subtracting 360 and just having it 17 West, I don't know).

So that's my challenge: Get a screenshot of yourself planting a flag on another 6500 or above peak besides these two. You must provide the longitude/latitude in the format that the unmodded KSP does (i.e., not just a DD.DDDDD format from kerbalmaps.com)

If there's no other 6500+ peak on Kerbin, than the highest above 6000 you can find.

I think there may be a third coming close to 6500 at -6.6357, 113.5767, and one above 6200 at -14.4580, 71.9385, but other than those all the other peaks just barely seem to pass 6000. Though I would say that making this challenge about climbing the six-thousanders seems appropriate, I would guess that would be the highest 12 to 15 mountains on Kerbin (appropriate when compared to the 14 "8-thousanders" here on Earth). Testing of a VTOL plane-rover for rough terrain has begun, and hopefully by Thursday or Friday I'll be flying them out to discover the height of the peaks of the other 6000-ers and near 6000-ers.

I have noticed a weird thing while Kerbin mountain climbing on foot. Sometimes your Kerbal vanishes in a puff of smoke. Sometimes I think it's when you reach a slope too steep and you're effectively pressing against an immovable object, and after a certain amount it becomes fatal. Other times, I think it's when your descent becomes steeper and steeper until you're effectively in free-fall.

But hey, if you can manage it in a rover, more power to you.

Those two high peaks I've been to, have relatively gentle slopes, it's probably possible to on-foot or rover up 'em.

Some peaks though ---- like, there's one just west of the KSC in the 5000 meter range, that is so steep I think it'd be almost impossible to get up it on foot or in a rover, I think you'd have to land on it.

Starting at sea level, I wouldn't press as a requirement; Everest climbers don't do that (usually).

I've had this on perfectly flat ground, especially but not solely in timewarp. I think it's more likely to happen with the terrain detail set lower. It's a big part of what makes long walks torturous to the point I won't do them any more, and can only really be solved by quicksave spam.

Heck, the other day I had a Kerbal go poof upon getting out of a safely landed craft that the other crewmember had already exited just fine.
