The Multi-National Space Station build report

Recommended Posts

Hello! I have been brainstorming ideas for a new space station, and I've decided to make one heavily influence off of the Space Station Freedom concept, but not 100% exact.

Parts being used will be from the following addons:

Fustek

KOSMOS

Procedural Parts

B9

Octotruss

Let's get to it, shall we?

Here we have an Oscar IV w/ x2 SRBs attached to the first stage.

1st stage sep and ullage, followed by interstage skirt and 2nd stage ignition.

Fairing sep, giving us the first look at the Columbia service module.

Once in a 75x75km orbit, the 2nd stage is discarded and deorbits itself automatically. Columbia unfurls it's pair of photovoltaic panels and single radiator.

The primary habitation module which is still to be named, and the Pressurized mating adapter will the next to be sent up.

If anyone would like to suggest a name for the second module, I'd really appreciate it!

The space shuttle "Endurance" sits on the pad, in her hold is the habitation module and PMA.

Main engine cutoff confirmed, separation of external tank confirmed.

Endurance approaches the first part of the MNSS, and once in range, releases the hab module...

...Which Columbia manuvers itself over to and docks. This configuration is temporary, however.

KeS2Elll.png

Endurance docks with the station once life support is stabilised, so they can confirm all systems are nominal.

Once confirmation that the station is operational, RSV-52 undocks...

...and re-enters the atmosphere, shortly after landing is successful.

Still looking for a name for the hab module. Next up will be the first of the module access corridors, and the "Apollodorus" orbital module tug/builder.

Thanks! Go to this thread: K3|Chris B9 Extension and go to the bottom post on that page, there is a download link.

The cockpit bolts directly onto the end of the HL fuselage system. :)

I don't want to screenshot the launch process for every build, so each following post will have at least 2 updates to the station.

Here's a more clear image of what the MNSS looks like so far. It is ultimately habitable, if barebones.

Say hello to the Apollodorus (named after Apollodorus of Damascus, a Greek Architect and Engineer) orbital builder/tug. With it's adjustable RCS arms, it can change the RCS CoM dynamically to suit payloads. Also, when docked to the station it will assist in power generation with it's large photovoltaic panels. At least until the truss system is implemented.

Apollodorus is seen here with the first of the crew access tunnels. Once attached, the MNSS will gain much modularity.

Apologies for the lack of docking pictures, however the event occured on the night side of Kerbin, thus the photos were not ideal. However here we can see the access tunnel attached firmly to Columbia.

Endurance, which was at a 0.5km safe distance, approaches the hab module pressurised module adapter, lining it's own docking port to the PMA. Bob Kerman is entrusted with the final approach.

Contact!

cudfI9Tl.png

This mission marks the first full-time crew aboard the station. Expedition 1, consisting of Bill, Geremone and Bobbo Kerman (No relation). Bob and Endrin will be returning to Kerbin this day.

kgfokLql.png

20 days later, RSV-53 (OV-103 Horizon) approaches the station, releasing it's payload. This time it is a utilities module.

WoN3dwAl.png 2YCCVf2l.png

Apollodorus unberths from the rear of the Columbia service module, snatches the utilities module out of the sky and maneuvers it to the station.

Docking complete.

That's another chunk of the build complete!

Cheers. :) I was busy at work, so I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to get work done on the statio.

y6R9yKul.png

RSV-54 heads skywards with another piece of the MNSS in it's bay.

FcsHJFRl.png

Endurance matches it's relative velocity with the station, and prepares to release it's cargo, a secondary habitation module.

Iats0F3l.png

Apollodorus takes the module and maneuvers it into an approach.

5LJr67wl.png TEXMo9Kl.png 1fXpmpMl.png

Docking complete! Now the crew have even more room to live.

cICBtNxl.png 0tjkFjOl.png

For some reason, I didn't take pictures of the addition of the secondary crew access hub tunnel, so I apologise for that. In any case, here is the Habitation + PMA is removed from it's temporary location, and is then moved to the front.

The station is really starting to take shape now.
