Disable the node planer ?

Recommended Posts

Hi, in an education purpose I would like to disable the node planer and the trajectory prediction (I want my students to calculate by them-self when and who to burn, and what quantity of delta-V they need). Is it possible ? And how ?

Thank you.

I'm sure this could be modded in. Perhaps the easiest way would be to use version 0.17.1 or earlier of the game. (Maneuver nodes were added in 0.18.) There used to be a way to get older versions through Steam, but I can't figure it out now, nor can I find the info anymore. Anyone else help with this?

You can only get the most recent and second most recent versions on Steam, so you definitely can't get a copy of 0.17.x from any official source anymore.

Perhaps you could simply not use the nodes? You are not required to put them down. (but I guess they would cheat. :P)

Also, are you asking to just get rid of the trajectory prediction? Or also the current blue orbit line?

There is a patched conics section in the settings.cfg. You can try to zero out the number of conics and see how much that handicaps the display. Or maybe it'll invite a div-zero error...?

I tried it and it did not work. I was still able to see my trajectory and place maneuvers on it.

Why not use the nodes as a method to verify the calculations?

Or use an a mod (maneuver nodes extended or something, sorry, cant remember its name) where you can enter exact values for maneuver nodes instead of the - not very scientific but very kerbal - maneuver node dragging.

I wonder what is the purpose of KSP in such situation actually, to prepare maneuvers without displayed trajectories and without maneuver nodes you need to dump orbital data and calculate on them. So you can just give your students these data and only when they're done you can give them access to KSP to verify their calculations.

Thank you for all your answers.

You could go into the gamedata folder, make a backup the png/jpeg files of the prograde/retrograde/etc. (open them with a program like Windows paint or Gimp) and erase the pixels.

That could be a dirty method to do it, but if it can work, why not ? But I search a little where it can be but haven't found any image file corresponding, in \GameData\Squad\Props there are some .mu which may correspond but I have not idea of what is it.

May be it is hardcoded in the game and cannot be access like that.

This would be really easy using a plugin - just delete all maneuver nodes once they exist.

I am sure a plugin can do the work very easily, but I never code a plugin, I absolutely don't know how it works.

Of course they cheat if you just ask them to not use it. I try to train them to have an "engineer" point of view, and to be able to predict what they are doing, not just launch and see the result.

The blue line of the actual trajectory is fine, it is important that they see where they go, have their apoapsis and periapsis altitudes.

I've already try the Conic_patch parameter, but it impact the number of trajectories plot after a change of SOI, if you don't change of SOI, there is no problems.

So my two possibilities are :

- delete the map button, and put a mod displaying the flight parameters, it is a bit sad to not have a map, but it may work (and the rendez-vous will become really difficult, even if it is still possible to calculate it manually)

- try to make a plugin (may be starting with a node editing plugin, I have to see how it is coded)
