VAB Free Placement

Recommended Posts

Is it a good idea? Probably not. When I build my first working, mostly cool looking rover, I was so proud of myself. An option for free placement of girders, structural panels and the like would open up a world of creativity unseen in most games. Mods get us close, but just a simple on/off button next to the angle snap button would be so much better. Just a thought.

Angle snap can already be disabled by clicking on the angle snap indicator. Simply right or left click the little octagon at the bottom of the parts menu and it should turn into a circle, which means angle snapping is disabled.

Beyond just snap placement. I'm talking full on put anything anywhere free placement. Like I said, probably not the best idea for the game. IDK, having grown up with LEGOs that weren't premolded for Hollywood and CONSTRUX made us all feel like spacemen, I likely just need about a million more parts in the construction section. And before it comes up, if I had the brain matter to make my own mod, I would have already. :D

I'm not sure what you want. Are you asking for part placement in midair? Because, to my knowledge, you can already place a part anywhere you want on other parts, so long as the part and the part you are attaching it to have radial attachment enabled. You wouldn't happen to be using the editor extensions mod, would you? If so, you may have vertical snap enable. Press v to disable vertical snap in editor extentions. (actually, if you don't have editor extensions, here's the link: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/38768-0-23-5-Editor-Extensions-v1-1-2-Apr-2014-%28EdTools-Editor-Tools-replacement%29 It may or may not have what you want in it.)

Are you maybe frustrated with limited rotation options? WASDQE will rotate objects 90 degrees and holding shift while doing it allows you to rotate parts in 5 degree increments. Editor extensions, mentioned by Vaporo, allows even more options and freedom (I think including radial attachment of normally stack-only parts). (EDIT: The Alt-F12 debug/cheat menu also has an option for enabling part-clipping to let parts intersect one another)

Technically speaking you cannot place anything anywhere. Each part has a limited set of axial mount point and exactly one radial mount point. You cannot attach a fuel tank radially by its base, only by middle of its side, for instance. Or you cannot reverse radial decoupler so it decouples your probe clean and sticks to the rocket instead.
