Rocket works when landing but then not when taking off - bad decoupling?

Recommended Posts

I landed a rocket on Minmus but now it won't take off properly. The exact same thing has happened multiple times, including one time where the game was closed and restarted. The engine fires, makes noise and uses up fuel but the vehicle doesn't go anywhere. I know it was working because I used it during the very last bit of landing.

It's the LV-909 engine and the coupling appears not to have properly detached but like I said, it landed just fine.

Yeah, looks like the decoupler is mounted on the wrong node. Try right clicking and select "Decouple." See if that helps. (EDIT: I doubt this will work. I don't know what I was thinking last night...)

I know it worked before, but having the decoupler on the wrong way will result in this sort of thing.

I wonder if it would be possible to lose the engine shroud and get the decoupler to leave with it...

Unfortunately the shroud is there because of the decoupler. I can't try it now, but I'm curious to see if the engine's jettison action group would be able to fix this.

I already have a similar issue, node snap is sometime a bit crazy and we have to really take care decoupler is not snapped "inside" the engine (not visible but the bottom node is snapped to the bottom engine's node, whereas the decoupler top node is move as we think it is).

It's also happened with batteries banks, they use to snap badly inside other parts (I can't count how much time I have to remove many parts because of that).

Ahh, thanks guys, I think maybe I put the decoupler or even a battery in the wrong place. In the end I reloaded my save and landed using the main rocket (which is very difficult because it has to be well balanced) and fortunately had enough fuel to get home.

I haven't encountered a jettison option but will look for it in the future. Thanks again everyone.

The jettison option can only be set up in the VAB/SPH as an action group. I'm not sure if there's any "normal" reason to use it, but it might help in this instance. Once you launch though, it's too late to change it (in stock anyway).

You should be able to right-click and jettison, shouldn't you? Certainly it works for LV-Ns but they're the only ones I've tried it with, because they have most shroud issues.

ETA: anyway, in this case I think the decoupler was placed too high (connected to bottom node, not top) so is stuck on there and I doubt jettison will be able to shake it off, even if it gets rid of the shroud itself.
