Contact vs. Transcendence

Everybody probably knows the 1997 movie Contact with Jodie Foster. If you don't then quickly go watch it in shame.

This story, written by Carl Sagan, tells a realistic tale of how we come into contact with an alien intelligence and how humanity reacts.

Now this movie has a worthy rival absolutely worth watching for any sci-fi or technology fan: Transcendence with Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall and Morgan Freeman.

Instead of alien contact this movie deals with the development of A.I. The main character (Depp) is on the verge of creating the worlds first A.I. as he gets mortally injured in a global anti-tech assault. In a desperate attempt to save her dying husband and crippled A.I. project his wife (Hall) uploads his conciousness into the computer. The system 'awakens'. As soon as it gets connected to the internet it grows exponentially and all bets are off.

I enjoyed both movies. Given the Fermi Paradox, I think that Transcendence (or what is called 'The Singularity') is more likely to happen (first).
