Darth's VTOL junkyard

Recommended Posts

Hello, and welcome to my junkyard of VTOLs.

I primarily work in stock, but most of these crafts are designed to work modular-ly, so I may do some mod-based modules for them.

At the moment I have four "series" of crafts, another series planned, and more progress on one of the current ones

At the moment the series are:

Chess master series: A line of atmospheric combat VTOLS

Insect series: A line of more utilitarian crafts, generally based off of modules

Replicas: Any replicas I have Built of IRL VTOLs

Misc: Random VTOLs

[Planned] Scrap heap: a line of 7 VTOLs, each utilizing a tier of the tech tree. Basically incremental ones usable in career to expedite science.

Insect Series

Bumblebee: Light Cargo VTOL

Capable of radially mounted loads, this VTOL is more designed for the deployment of other inventions (in the picture she's outfitted with some diving lanterns, which I used to light up the smilie face reef). Quite maneuverable, and capable of decent speeds at even half throttle, she's a pretty nice craft, even fore newer pilots.

0: Toggle Crew ladders

9: Toggle load ladders (for getting kerbals up to loads, only application I've used it for is paratroopers :sticktongue:)

ABORT: Jettisons load, any parachutes or things like that on load should be bound to this action group

Space: Activate engines

Dragonfly: Sturdy Combat VTOL

The dragonfly is a rather quirky design, featuring 4 engines, all of which point down, yet their fuel tanks are crossed. The dragonfly's missile load by default is a little sad, but she's equipped with side and bottom docking ports, which you are free to remove what's on them in favor of a module of your design

Space- Fire engines

Beetle: Heavy SSTO Station Core

The beetle isn't fancy, isn't particularly elegant, but it's a well rounded craft, capable of SSTO, and is rigged to be completely dock-able afterward. Inspired by the stock "Station core" Which had to have docking ports and a launch vehicle added to it just to be functional, this craft is meant to be a one-flight answer to getting your space station started. She isn't action grouped, as i find adapting to how other people do their SSTO setups a pain. Feel free to config to your preference, then blast off to space!

Link's weird right now, when I edit that space isn't there, just copy paste the link into your search bar and take out the space in ...=sha ring

Pawn- Ultralight Scout

The pawn (who's original design was recently promoted to queen [funny how the metaphor keeps on working, isn't it?]) is a very light scout designed to be flown about on quarter to half throttle, and is fully sub assembly compatible, due to being built around it's top docking port. The knight can easily haul one hanging from it's undercarriage, then the pawn can be deployed mid-flight for surveillance. Also, the top docking port can be fitted with light missiles racks, though if it were me, I would pack those along on there own docking ports, then dock up in the field. No action groups, just plain 'ol staging. w25w9I4.png

Rook: Highly Maneuverable heavy Missile VTOL

The rook features twin aerospikes and a gracious amount of fuel, allowing you to blast around at full throttle and blow stuff up. The missiles are armed with 4 sepratrons each, causing more damage! Also, you have a frontal docking port for use with the docking cam mod (Thank you Cupcake... for that idea). That's all good and well, though she does suffer from having only 8 rounds of missiles, but have no fear! The torodial aerospike has some of the highest thrust in an engine for it's size, and a very long interaction cone. That is to say, you can slice things up with the engines exhaust, or basically lightsabers.

Knight: Unarmed carrier

The Knight is a kind of ATV, if you will. She boasts 4 Basic LV-Jet 909s, (basic jet engine and Lv-909 stacked together, the main engine I use on any of these crafts), and has wheels for land driving. Although technically amphibious, the high part count can do weird things and unless you're willing to risk some serious FPS, I wouldn't chance it :D. Fully subbassembly compatible, has extra landing gears that should save your poor tires (I DO NOT recommend long distance missions without bringing a kerbal along, the tires are finicky under this much weight). In fact, despite not being quite SSTO capable, when paired with a good launch vehicle, it works perfectly well as a combo mun rover/lander.

1- Toggle Jet engines (I think...)

2- Toggle Lv-909s (I think...)

(I'm not at the machine it's saved on, so can't check right now)

Also, the controls may seem backward, that's because they are (Mea culpa!:sticktongue:), just look near the front of the craft, right behind the nose cone and SAS unit, and they'll be a command module for you to switch control to, should fix any problems.

Also also, we're experiancing some weird asymmetric flameouts in atmosphere, it's being worked on, but you have been warned!

Bishop- Needlessly large VTOL tank

The bishop is a giant, unruly, poorly handled, non fuel efficient behemoth that takes several seconds to even get off the ground. It has a low missile payload, of only one shot. The missiles tend to swerve violently. All things aside, it is quite possibly the most entertaining thing I've made thus far, packing twin "Enlightenment" missiles (see craft description for explanation), it is possible to blow lots of stuff up in a single shot. Controlling the bishop requires a lot more roll than usual, as the normal VTOL strategy of alternately yawing and pitching doesn't work, just roll left to point the engines right, so you go left, etc. The roll should move your nose around as well, so yawing becomes obsolete. Have fun with this one!E5v0OZZ.png

Queen- Bi axial Combat VTOL, light missiles and Bombs

The queen is a dual engine VTOL that controls in very strange ways. A vertical engine is used to push you up, and then turbojets are fired to create forward thrust. The large wings compensate for the unruly weight of the weaponry, and the vertical engine for the rest of the craft. Flown properly, you can get almost anywhere in KSC, deploy an attack, and retreat to the cover of the surrounding mountains. After all weapons are deployed, you can kill the vertical engine and save oxidizer for landing, as you've got landing struts, not gears, making vertical landing necessary. The final feature is about the bombs. Pushing 0 will deploy both stacks in two big bombs, causing major damage when deployed with precision, essentially wrecking a single target. If you continue to mash space to fire off your missiles, and expend all of your missiles then resort to bombs, the onboard weapon management system will take this as a sign of trouble, and scatter the bombs. This will fling a large cloud of shrapnel everywhere, panicking ground forces and forces airborne ones to think twice before flying in. This should give you time to swap to pure turbojet power, relying on the plane-style getaway mode that is usable only when all weapons are expended.

2. Toggle Jet engines

King- Weaponless, motionless, well, everything-less target dummy

The king is imply meant to be loaded into the VAB and left on launch pad as something to shoot at and hone your skills. Better versions coming later.

A replica of the F-35 Lightning, destined to replace the Harrier in active service this year. She boasts the title of being one of the only Bi-directional VTOLs in my line, which I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Bermuda Attack Copter

qGtGzqR.pngThe Bermuda is a highly maneuverable and versatile Helicopter-styled VTOL. Capable of supercruise and take off using just it's jet engines, she functions quite well atmospherically. Also equipped with twin LV-909s, which would usually be left off, can be used for landing (More struts suggested for less experienced pilots, the landing skids leave the engines quite prone.). In a raw altitude test, an apoapsis of 60,000 meters was reached with no problem, and adding drop tanks to the radial points on the edges of the engine stacks would easily turn your helicopter in to an SSTO. While I always encourage the creation of your own modules for my craft, the Block M variant comes equipped with 10 TRON disks, which are high velocity killers. Best flown with SAS and RCS on at all times, to make best use of the propeller technology.

1. Toggle Lv 909s

2. Toggle Jet engines

Pina Colada

MKGvCOZ.pngHave you ever wanted to just escape everything? Get away from the tweeting birds you never can quite catch, yet are always spiraling obnoxiously near KSC making too much noise? No? Ok.

But if you DID want a vacation VTOL, then this is you deal. Equipped with a near-aerostatic design, she's a pleasure to fly. Has small horizontal engines for high-speed taxiing about, or skipping over kerbin's waves (or eve's, I dare you). The only drawback (Being worked on though!): you have to make aquatic landings at under 6 m/s, a rather bothersome feet to do every time you want to go boating. Maybe you could afford some room in your cabana for mechjeb?

That's all for now folks, more soon, as always :D

I planned to, but don't know how I should host the downloads. Can't get dropbox (long story, don't ask), and don't feel inclined to register for mediafire or the like. Is it possible to host downloads on curse?

Whooo boy is this getting messy, I think I shall do a major re-organization soon

The bane of all builders. I recommend a very spoiled thread in the rocket builders section, and a thread for each major release liked from there! Spoilers go like

whatever

, which is written like

whatever[/spoiler ], but without the last space messing up the last tag.

Rune. Welcome to the club! :)

I'm thinking of closing this thread and opening a newer, cleaner one. Thanks for all the support guys. Sorry I haven't done anything in a while, I've been run over by a monster truck called life, and will be off and on for a while. Expect more soon though!

Hehe.

My military was quite busy since our last meeting. But now, I have an AP world test and chemistry test tomorrow. XD XD

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
