Separator heat shields

Recommended Posts

Why are the heat shields configured as separators? is there any way to disable the separator functionality? currently I'm moving it to a stage after the chutes have fired but they have caused me some Kerbals in some occasions when I messed up this.

Thanks

This looks like a Deadly Reentry question.

Anyway, the heat shields are configured as separators because they can potentially save you parachute mass if you can discharge the heavy heat shield before they deploy. Why that can't be achieved by just putting a decoupler in the middle if you want it, that's a question for the mod maker.

If you want to disable it, you have to do it manually.

You can go into the parts file (go to the KSP directory >> Gamedata >> DeadlyReentry >> Parts)

Open the individual text file for each part.

At the end of each file there should be a section like so:

{

name = ModuleDecouple

ejectionForce = 40

//explosiveNodeID = top

isOmniDecoupler = true

staged = true

}

Delete that, make sure the brackets are still balanced, and you should have a normal, stick-on decoupler. You will have to repeat it for each part though, so it might be worthwhile only doing it for the heat shields you use regularly.
