Their lander malfunctioned upon takeoff on the Mun, and were left stranded.

They landed, but didn\'t have enough fuel left for return.

Shelgar Kerman, Alsey Kerman, and Dunton Kerman

These brave Kerbals sacrificed their lives to cover up the utter failure of the Kerbal Space Center\'s computer and autopilot development program, as a result of which all \'unmanned\' probes launched by the Kerbal Space Program have to be piloted manually. Their Munprobe spacecraft successfully performed its mission and landed in the center of one of the munar mares; its design, however, did not include a return stage.
