Will you be making the Pegasus XL, too? It's just like Pegasus, but a bit longer. Also, you might be interested in Taurus. It's basically Pegasus without aerodynamic bits, but with a larger fairing and a Castor 120 as a first stage. It'd literally require you to make one more booster, an adapter and a pair of fairings.

And this is only a start of the fun. Once you have a Castor 120, you could make another set of fairings, an OAM (a small, monoprop-fueled stage with 4 small engines), and you'd have an Athena 1A. Add a Castor-120 interstage and you can make Athena 2A. Add another booster (Orbus 21D) and it'll make you the early Athenas. Remember when I mentioned those solid rockets are modular? :) I can provide you with pictures of OAM and HAPS stages if you want.

Peagsus looks amazing, will you make a plane to go with it as any plane I make to carry something like that hary ever leaves the runway :P

Edit: I though peagasus had a third stage? Did you leave that out as kerbin is smaller? Also consider making the third stage liquid as it would make it MUCH easier to orbit

I am going to make the Xl verson, I am just trying to work out the best way to make the larger stages without creating brand new models. I like the idea of the athena and tarurus, sounds really awesome to make this mod modular! Looks like even more ATK solid rocket motors!

Thanks! I'm not sure if i'll make aStargazer (the launch aircraft) but if enough people ask for one I will. I did model the third stage, but it is a bit hard to see in the picture, hahah. Its 0.8 of a meter wide, the reall orion-38 is 0.97 meters. I have scaled the craft to make it 1.25m.

I might make it a hybrid engine. :D

Just remember to keep everything proportional, or you'll run into compatibility issues with the rockets. Also, you might want to model those particular LVs in 1:1 scale. That would make them much easier to use in mods like RSS, and their small size would mean they'd still work just fine in stock.

The cygnus and antares are 64% and I will make a 100% for RSS. However I wanted to make the Pegasus compatable with stock. The real pegasus uses 1.27m parts, so i scaled it to 1.25m as 0.8m (64% of 1.27) is quite useless. Do you think I should keep it as is or make it 64% scale?

Though call, really. If you want to share Castor 30 between Antares and Athena, it'd be good to make them the same scale. 1.27m should fit (just barely) 1.25m parts inside the fairing, so there's that. Athena would be 2.36m, which would easily fit 1.25m spacecraft with large side protrusions (such as Goo Containers). On the other hand, that would make Antares 3.9m, which is usable in KSP, but very large (you could easily fit 3.75m parts under the shroud). Athena would be 2.32 under Pegasus scaling and 1.5m under 64% scaling. Both can fit 1.25m parts with some space to spare.

I think you should either go with 64% or 100% scaling. 64% would scale well with the Community ISS, but the smallest specimen (Pegasus and small-fairing Taurus) would only fit tiny 0.625m probes. It'd be par the course for them (as they are very small LVs), but might be of limited use in KSP. On the other hand, making Pegasus very small would make air launch easier. I don't think you should make a launch plane, they can easily be built with available parts. The smaller the rocket, the easier it'd be. 100% scale would make the pack fit with a more "normal" KSP rocket dynamic, but also make lifting the Pegasus harder and make Antares incredibly large.

Yeah keep it 1.25 so it can carry the probe sized parts

Please consider making stargazer as it's incredibly hard to make a plane to fit it (for me) though I know how hard it is to make parts and stuff

Err... I just outlined why 1.25m is a bad idea. It messes up scaling on everything else and it's so close to 1:1 that there's no point. 1.27m would work just as well for carrying probes, and it could (depending on the fairing thickness) carry 1.25m parts, too. The downside is, it'd make a properly scaled Antares enormous.

Also, some info on HAPS upper stage for Pegasus. It doesn't always carry one, but it can: http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_stage/haps.htm

It should be monoprop-powered, but with the engines being engines and not RCS thrusters. The page also mentions Super HAPS for Minotaur, it could be worth making, too (if you're doing Minotaurs, that is).

Wow, I didn't realise their were so many variations of the Pegasus. This is going to take longer than I thought. I've made the XL castors, just need to make an XL fairing. The HAPS stage looks really cool! Can't wait to get that going, just not sure how many parts to make it.

I have decided I will make all the parts 100%. It seems simpler, but I might make alternate .cfgs with 64% scale for those who want it.

I expect I will make the Minotaurs, though in a later release. V1 will have stable Antares and Pegasus. V2 will have Prometheus and some of launch systems you mentioned earlier. V3 will be anything else.

One more thing. Is the Pegasus wing single piece? I'd prefer having the part split into three. Two wings and a mounting point. This is so that FAR support can be properly set up. The tail fins can't be fused to the tail ring, either.

The tail fins are seperate parts yes. The wing was going to be 2 parts, the wing and the mount but if you think 3 is better I can just split it in half. I don't really understand how to set wings up for FAR, I looked briefly at the offical tutorial but I didn't really understand it. a18ffdcc8b.png Also does anyone know why this is happening(thumbnails in the picture below). I have never seen this before.

FAR setup is simple. You need:

Distance from wing root to tip (b_2).

Distance from leading to trailing edge, measured in the center of the wing (MAC).

Sweep angle (MidChordSweep).

Ratio of tip length to root length (TaperRatio).

For control surfaces, you also need:

Whether it attaches like a stock wing or not (nonSideAttach, 1 is control surface, 0 is wing).

How much will it deflect (maxdeflect).

Also, you need to make sure the wing surface-attaches either like a stock wing or a stock control surface (surface attachment must be disabled, but attachment point must be defined).

  • 2 weeks later...

I got a bit of progress today. I retextured and sized one of the stock solar panels because my last 2 attemptsto make one from scratch failed. I spent some time tidying up:

fixed some nodes, texture work and a bit of file management.b541c26bd4.pngfb07a60d06.png394c5a9592.png

UPDATE V1.1

Nothing major but I have removed all the dependencies. The km_gymbal was no longer needed and the reflection plugin was casuing a bug on the SM. I also fixed a texture artifact.

And because everyone loves pictures:
