Boosters basically are obsolete the second you unlock jet engines. They get you higher, albeit slower, and are guaranteed to not run out of fuel before they run out of atmosphere. I'm sure this will no longer be true once you actually start having to pay for parts in Career Mode though.

I disagree; while jet engines are more efficient in terms of fuel economy, huge liquid fuel boosters are more efficient in terms of playing time economy (frame rate). I almost always design gargantuan liquid fuel boosters to transport my obscenely large payloads to orbit, because it's more time efficient to play with a smallest part number. The fuel efficiency decreases, but you can always counteract that by adding a couple more LFO boosters.
