What is the best way to place SAS?

Recommended Posts

I found out in another thread that it\'s bad to place SAS modules using symmetry because they cancel each other out and make the ship spin, but what about vertical placement? Is it better to have the SAS just at the top, under the command pod or is it better to place them somewhere in the middle, near the rocket\'s center of mass? If using multiple modules, should they be together or separated, one near the top, the other near the bottom?

To my understanding the farther away from center of mass you place them, the more rotational torque they will create. Kinda like moving a mass on a seesaw lever. The farther you are from the fulcrum, the less force it takes to move the same mass. Just be careful, as without proper supports or solid design you can create some nasty vibrations if your craft is too long or too wide.

I like placing my SAS/ASAS at the bottom. And actually, placing SAS in symmetry does NOT cancel the out.

Attaching SAS radially and using symmetry does cause them to cancel out though.

I think it\'s my post you read :)

But what I\'ve recently started doing is placing the SAS/ASAS in a place that can be detached and at the lowest place i\'ll need it (first/second stage).

My main boosters/tanks and engines will be radially attached off of a fuel tank below the command pod.

I will attach a stack decoupler to the fuel tank below the command pod, and then the SAS module to the decoupler.

Now all my tanks and engines are radially mounted (which gives super thrust). Once I no longer need SAS (I\'m in orbit), I\'m able to drop the SAS module from beneath the command pod :D

Me likey efficiency.
