Well, the allies back in WW II got info of Normandy through pictures, so the "no picture" law is pretty smart actually

Normandy was half-a-century ago. Now I do agree with you on the one hand in the security sense, but on the other hand, google streetview and the internet in general makes most of these no-picture signs redundant insofar as an interested person could get what they want in reasonable quality, without ever visiting the venue at all.

Time and technological progress have transformed this security measure into security theatre.

EDIT:

Actually, another thing to note about the Curragh camp, featured in my OP in this topic. There's actually a civilian housing estate which is situated within the same stretch of road where the 'no camera' rule applys. I must ask a few of them how they cope day-to-day. I'd be suprised if any of them give that rule any notice.

White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico had some photography restrictions, but you could take photos in parts of the museum area (most of which is outside).

Two developers (Czech) of the military game Arma III got thrown in jail in Greece for "spying" as they were scouting out the details of a military installation (or more than one) on Lemnos. (The island Altis in the game is a 3/4 scale version of Lemnos.)
