[showcase] Post your .24 re-usable designs here!

Here is my rescue SSTO in my new .24 career

I have not unlocked rcs thrusters or docking ports yet. I went straight for the turbojet

It has around 874 delta v left after orbit.

wow. not even any fuel lines! You have batteries, why aren't you using them? Must have needed a lot of work that, so rep for you :)

I've had the most success with my hybrid first stage design. It uses Basic Jet Engines to get to an altitude of around 20-25km and then uses rocket engines to climb to around 100km. The second stage is disconnected once above 70km and has enough time to get into orbit before the first stage gets below 23km and despawns (tested). The first stage then uses parachutes and the remaining jet fuel to make a soft landing in water.

Basic Jet Engines work better then Turbo Jets at the low speeds and altitude needed for this stage. Each Basic Jet can lift around 10-13 tonnes of rocket. A detailed explanation why can be found here [Forum Link]

A simple version can be built once the Aerodynamics node is unlocked in the Technology Tree but the principle can also be used to build much larger and more complex rockets.

In this example, the first stage of this rocket costs 27054.4√ and 22885.31√ or around 85% can be recovered.

It would also be possible to make it fully re-usable by flying the first stage back to the space centre, refueling it with docking ports or the Kerbal Attachment System and using a crane to attach the next payload to the top.

Any designs to go to the Mun here?

This is my Kestrel-Kerbooster stack visiting the Mun with the help of an all-solid first stage. The Kerbooster mid stage had enough fuel to place both planes on a Mun intercept trajectory.

Once landed, Kestrel doubles as a rover.

Both planes return to the runway.

It may be made with mod parts (Spaceplane Plus), but the MSI Falcon has already proven its worth in just 3 missions. The first was a simple test flight to ensure it could operate as intended, and it passed with flying colours.

The second flight was a rescue mission that went well, recovering Geofry Kerman from his... unusual situation.

The third flight was testing the payload capacity more than anything, but we still launched 2 comms satellites into orbit successfully.

The Falcon will no doubt continue to prove useful in future, though it may well see some revisions further down the line.

This one uses mostly tier 4 parts (and of course turbojets, but only those tier 5 parts which are on a direct link to turbojets)

There are two variants - a research/part testing version and a crew rescue variant -

Thanks for the rep :)

It has 1 small battery and fuel lines underneath and in between the wings.

might want to replace those big and heavy rocket engines with the tiny, high TWR. looks awesome anyway! (+rep+)

That looks really cool!

This one has 9 parts and gets into orbit easily with about 1100 m/s DV left for orbital manoeuvres. Landing is very hard though because roll must be perfectly horizontal. Could do with some front canards or maybe even a parachute, but I was going for fewest number of parts.

I haven't found a particular use for the following craft. It has a cargo bay, passenger module, gatling gun, bunch of external cameras for IVA, VTOL engines. Multipurpose.

Oh. My. GOK.

WHY did you put a RAPIER in the nose of the craft????????? if the nose won't come up, put in a pair of canards, you'll save alot of money, and the craft will be lighter.

other than that, great looking plane!

The two rear RAPIERs have hinges and can rotate like the F-35's rear engine to point downwards. Together the 3 RAPIERs provide rocket VTOL capability.

There is a hidden canard inside the flight deck (I'm not a fan of visible canards) and the craft can still take off conventionally if I move the rear landing gears towards the CoM. But since this is STOL configuration, the gears are further back to provide better stability.

Yep, except I hadn't unlocked them when I built this design... Also, it doesn't use fuel lines or batteries (you do need to keep an eye on power and just make sure that you are pointing the solar panels into the sun at least some of the time..)
