KSP store vs Steam

Pecan's got it. If you use Steam, you might as well use it for KSP, too. If you don't use Steam, no reason to start just for KSP, use the store.

Though I did notice that Steam players seemed to have an easier time downloading 0.24 when it came out, I'd imagine Steam's servers have a ton more capacity than the KSP store's.

this has been asked a trillion times already...

but,

no, the game is identical.

good thing for steam:

1. update server download is a thousand times faster

2. autoupdate

3. trading card ($0.1 X4 is still money)

bad thing for steam

3. autoupdate (you can disable it anyways)

4. steam overlay is bothersome

I'm pretty sure the ingame overlay can be turned off.

The main reason I prefer it on Steam is that that's where most of my other games are, and it's a lot more convenient to me for them all to be managed through the same program. It really depends on how much you like and use Steam -- there's no difference for KSP, but if you like and use Steam a lot it's probably better to use it for KSP as well. If you hate Steam, don't use it for KSP.

It is easier to install mods on the store version, and the Steam version has some minor DRM (Yes, it is there, it is an online trading service, of course it will have DRM).

It does *not* have DRM of any form that I'm aware of, nor, in my experience, is it any sort of issue at all installing mods on the Steam version [aka the Steam version copied out of the Steam directory, as they're identica] (for some reason, I've never seen the sort of issue that people report happens running KSP from Program Files launching the Steam version through Steam; it seems like Steam automatically handles things to get around the Windows restrictions or something).

1. Why wouldn't something that you get from a third party have DRM? Not trying to start an argument, just saying.

2.It's just easier to find all the files.

Because DRM is an optional component in Steamworks, which developers don't have to use, and Squad has chosen not to use.

2.It's just easier to find all the files.

Fair point. I happen to know where Steam keeps its games, but if you didn't already know, it would be substantially more annoying.

You can also create a new steam install dir on another drive, ofcourse it will in sub/sub/sub map, but it cames enough space to dump all your stuff there in seperated folders while keeping the install clean :)

The games are identical. If you like steam use it. Personally I hate it and only 1 of my ~400 games uses it. I don't play that game much.

No i upgrade my KSP through KSP store, i bought it before KSP moved to steam, i just wondering does is worth to move to Steam.

It's always annoying to navigate through steam.

I migrated my KSP install out of Steam for that exact reason.

Steam is great as a delivery program. I get the updates through Steam and then copy the program directory elsewhere to create the installs I like to have (pared down for modding, stock for any challenges I might want to do, and an RSS install for general play). I then launch each of those installs from within their respective program directory without using Steam; no annoyance at the overlay, no bragging required. Lately the Steam copy has become the stock install, so I can let it auto-update as it wants while leaving my other installs alone.

Whether you move to Steam or not really just depends on how you want the software delivered and how much you use Steam. If you use Steam a lot you can easily just pretend it's the Store version once it has been delivered to your doorstep.

First thing I do when I get a new version of KSP on steam is rip the folder out of steamapps and put it somewhere else so I don't have to run steam to run the game. There is no DRM on the steam version of KSP. Just thought I'd help clarify this.

I think regex has found the very definition of the best of both worlds for this! I may well do that too, although tbh I've not had any problems updating from the store in ages (even during an update frenzy).

Does the steam version use the launcher? I remembrr from way back there were talks abiut using thr KSO launcher as a platform to download and manage mods.

Now, steam workshop compatibility would trump this if modders felt inclined to use the workshop, but i dont want to make a one wat transfer and leave behind a lovely feature like that

It doesn't use it if you launch it from Steam. It does include launcher.exe, which you can use to launch it outside of Steam.

i don't understand why people don't like steam. Every gripe people seem to have you can normally just turn off, their servers are amazing, community is fine, delivery stsem-wise it is unbeaten.

And whats the latest on workshop intergration? Is that a planned feature or will it always involve unzipping into directories?

Squad's official channel for mod distribution is Curse, not Steam Workshop. This is because a lot of people don't use Steam and therefore using Steam Workshop would exclude a lot of people when it comes to installing mods. As for always involving manual installation, I'm not sure.
