KSP store vs Steam

First thing I do when I get a new version of KSP on steam is rip the folder out of steamapps and put it somewhere else so I don't have to run steam to run the game. There is no DRM on the steam version of KSP. Just thought I'd help clarify this.

I'm pritty sure you don't need to run steam anyway if you want to start KSP. Just start it directly from the .exe

Does the steam version use the launcher? I remembrr from way back there were talks abiut using thr KSO launcher as a platform to download and manage mods.

Now, steam workshop compatibility would trump this if modders felt inclined to use the workshop, but i dont want to make a one wat transfer and leave behind a lovely feature like that

No launcher no, I didn't even know there was a launcher until I saw people posting about how it didn't work :P

KSP does not start Steam by its own, so yes, if you start directly the .exe it will not start it.

I'm going to defend Steam a little here:

"It is hard to navigate to KSP"

- Well, in Steam, right click the game, select "Properties" and in the "local files" tab, you have a button that says "browse local files". 3 clicks to go!

- Steam servers are better, I had no problem downloading the 0.24(.1) version.

- Insta-sharable screenshots!

If one day KSP goes exclusively on Steam (which I think is not going to happen anytime soon) :

- With the Steam Workshop integration you would be able to share crafts, save games, and publish mods.

- Easy to implement multiplayer framework using Steam servers, with downloads to set up custom servers

- Achievements (although custom achievements could be made, and a mod already exists for that)

I'm not trying to convince everyone to go and take the Steam version, but I'm saying here why I prefer Steam over anything else for game deployment (and of course over Origin or UPlay :D )

Chiming in as a Steam user, I'd like to say that KSP is one of those games where, if you want to do it, using Steam has no downsides whatsoever. I use Steam regularly as most of the games I own are there, but I have it set up so that it doesn't start with the OS, and in effect I don't see Steam at all unless I want to. So you could use Steam to download the game, and then just completely turn it off and never see it again until there is an update, when you'd log back in - this way you get all the benefits of Steam's better update servers, and none of whatever you see as Steam's drawbacks because you hardly ever even have it running.

Move your default Steam library to something accessible like C:\SteamGames like I did, and you'll never have trouble finding your game files either. ^_^

Hell, even if you go through explorer, it's only 3 more clicks (steam->steamapps->common) to get to your game folders.

I really don't see how people concider 3 extra clicks somehow difficult to find. Sure the first time I ever wanted to open the folder to a steam game it took me maybe a minute extra because I didn't know where to look, but that's it

Damn you guys are lagging... thanks to the various Indie Game sales sites, and the regular seasonal Steam Sales, I now have over 300 games in my library!!! I'm set for life :D

Apart from... KSP now takes up most of my gaming time... everytime I think I have burnt out, or just start getting bored, a new challenge is posted or an update comes out and it's like a whole new game again ^.^

Do you have Steam installed already? If so, then I agree with the others - because Steam is a worldwide distribution system, if the server you are currently connected to is slow (and not your internet being slow...) then you can happily jump to any other server in the world - I do this sometimes, as somewhere that is early-in-the-morning compared to where I am has a much lower load then the one in your specific country where everyone else might be trying to download things from... as far as I know, the KSP store only has the one server, which can lead to problems (none of which are Squad's fault, I hasten to add!) :)
