"Antarctica" - A Kerbal Space Program Movie

Recommended Posts

"Antarctica" is a story of Friendship, Loss and Revenge.

Set in the South Pole...

Antarctica is a near half an hour long narrative film following Jeb and Bill's unanticipated journey to the South Pole. This film's been in the works for quite a while and has consumed the last month and a half of my life, so I hope you enjoy it. A big thank you to ABAthedude and Rune who directly helped me with the making of this film one way of another. And also thanks to Nassault who is pretty much the reason so many people will be able to enjoy the film. By the way, somebody will have to verify this, but I think I might have made the longest high-quality KSP film to date. In any case, I certainly had fun making this, so I hope you have fun watching.

Quick Notes:

- Too much M83? I agree... but I bought the album so I guess I should get my money's worth.

- I learnt a lot making this film but it could have been improved pretty much everywhere,

so leave any constructive criticisms in this thread or the film's comments section.

- You can now download Johnbas' VTOL, available at all good Skunkworks!

- Thanks to Astronomer who's now endorsing the film on the curse page for his visual pack.

I suppose the film does do a good job of highlighting the Auroras.

This movie was really great! But I want to ask you something, at 8:55, why is it earths moon and not mun? :P

Wow, you've got a keen eye. Didn't think anyone would notice. Did it because the shot was so far zoomed in that the actual mun looked very low resolution and needed to be replaced with something that looked a bit higher quality. Thinking about it now, I probably should have used an image of the mun instead of the moon.

Impossible to see here in Germany ... Again this stupid GEMA that blocks everything without proofs ...

Possible to upload it on Vimeo or Dailymotion too ?

Just tried to upload it to both and I'm afraid it's not allowing me. Vimeo wants money and daily motion doesn't like the format of the file. Sorry, have you tried watching through a proxy?

Could you tell me how you alter your FOV? This is something I've never been able to figure out.

I don't change the FOV, it's simply a side effect of a technique I use which involves zooming in the footage and keyframing its position. It just adds a bit of depth.

That was so amazingly fantastic. And while I always say this when I comment on a lot of the various KSP Cinematics, while I appreciate the technical qualities of the film editing and effects (I work in video/TV), it's the sound design and soundtrack that brings a film to life, and I felt the moments as I believe you intended. Great job! :D

I was able to watch it because of a proxy. I think there are some proxys around the net, you just need to google that >.>

Really glad you noticed all of that! I had so much fun doing the sound effect for this film, especially the broadcast scene at the end. The SFX in that scene really made it for me :)

I use the TOR browser bundle to watch the blocked stuff. You can also simply use proxyfree.com

Alright. It was the whole mix between the friendship plot and perfect matching music. The scene where bill and jeb talks after the crash. then the forgotten kerbal and his rage against the space program, because they leave him alone. It's a incredible mix of point of view. I'm with the space program guys, but also can understand the feelings of the forgotten kerbal. And at all jeb has done right where the space program just give up: rescue his friend or die with him, but not leave him alone.

I hope it helps you and sorry for my bad english. I'm better in describing technical stuff in english than feelings.

Thanks man, this should really help me with writing the next film. I've already started planning an eye watering scene where... oh wait, I probably shouldn't tell you :P

Man' date=' I'm jealous, I've never got to fully complete a cinematic in my life yet.

Currently i'm occupied on a cinematic of another genre for a group called "Brixco" here in the forums in the rocket builders section.

Nice work.[/quote']

Cool. Post it in my community cinematics thread when it's finished :)

By the way, could you give me help with making cinematics, like, y'know, I have no experience making a final product. Say, could you give me some suggestions, and, say, a small/miniature list of free downloadable royalty free music if you have any?

Also, maybe some topic suggestions?

Also, I subscribed to your channel after watching through random points in your antartica video and 0.5 seconds in a random point within your latest Naval Military Series. Great stuff man!

It's difficult to help you until I know what you're already capable of. See if you can make a short demo cinematic just so I can tell you where it could be improved. As for royalty free music, Secession Studios, Icon Audio and Machinima sound are all great places to go. However if you don't want any creative boundaries then simply disable monetisation and you can go wild with music. Providing it's not too popular and you make sure to give credit.

By the way, what's the name of the music in your video called: KSP | Kethane Station #17 - Aftermath

at 9:42? Macey used that music, and I damn want that soundtrack... because, not just because I thought it would be awesome for cinematics and such, but I actually love it, part of it/all of it tells a story of depression and sadness. I know it was by MBMRobots, but what's the name? Could you give me a link to the page where I can download it? Thanks in advance.

Alright, I'll get to work on a demo cinematic. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you're interested then I run a Naval Military Series, which I think of as the perfect blend of Macey Dean, World War K and Nassault. Make sure to subscribe if you think I am worthy of joining the group of talented KSP video makers

I don't always make cinematics, but when I do. They're better than Nassault's.

Definitely true! :D

Had to explain this in the comments section of the video too. It is indeed by MBMR but it's so old that you can't listen to it or download it anywhere. It doesn't even have a known title, I simply call it "Far From Home" which is the name of the Macey Dean video I managed to extract it from. I could put up a download link... but I fear that might be slightly illegal. Anyway, thanks for the nice words!

Brilliant! Just brilliant! Btw, what mods and crafts are you using?

That can all be answered in the film's credits. However I didn't mention there that the search plane was the B9-Haldeman that comes stock with the mod. And cheers, glad you enjoyed it :)

You should make a 2nd one! I dunno... Maybe like the earthquake effected Kerbin and its getting destroyed or something like that.... Anyways... I hope I can master video making on ksp soon :D

Not too keen on making another disaster/rescue film. Already near the end of writing my next film actually, it's a military one :)

And don't worry, just put your head to it and you should get there in no time.

News just in! You can now get your greasy hands on some fresh off the line "Antarctica" merchandise! Our first selection of toys and collector items includes a 1:1 scale replica of Johnbas' VTOL!... and that's it.

Check out Rune's Skunkworks or the Viper attack VTOL's own thread to get some exclusive back story (WiP), screenshots and info.
