New Part: Mission Plaques!

Recommended Posts

A lot of real-world craft have plaques attached to them; like the one set by Neil Armstrong/Buzz Aldrin, or the Voyager golden records. I think a neat little add-on would be a small golden plaque you could attach to any section of any craft with your own message, written in the VAB. Maybe an explanation of Kerbal psychology on a probe headed out of Kerbol's SOI, or a little inspirational message on the descent stage of your Munar lander. Anyway, just a little idea I had. What do you think?

Movable plaques/flags would be nice too, but not necessary.

I'd prefer this by far more than switchable flags on every element. It'd be cheaper, easier, and have much more potential for creativity.

It could also be switched between the agency flag and contractor flag - two birds with one stone ;)

You know what: You're right. I'd really like to pack all contractor flags and stuff on the rocket that's fulfilling 3 or more contracts at once!

Screw it, I like this idea - forget what I said earlier today ;)

I'm of the opinion that plaques mountable onto spacecraft should be something best left to a mod. The plaques have no real important function in-game, they take up space that could be used for other parts, and most of the time they wouldn't be readable anyway because the plaque would have to be small enough to be realistic. While it would be interesting to have a Voyager-esque probe on a Kerbol escape trajectory, couldn't you just pretend there is? Maybe a USB drive stashed on it with all the info a plaque would have?

1. You could make the same argument about plaques having no real important function for flags! They're just a fun little thing that you plant down somewhere just to show you were there.

2. Sure, they would take up a tiny bit of space, but not much more than, say, than the single solar panel squares. Probably less. I don't know about you, but I usually have at least that much space left on a lander.

3. You know how when you inspect an already-planted flag, it says read, then it displays a golden plaque in a text box in front of you? That's what I'm talking about when I say you write stuff on it. You'd have to right click it to read, not try and read it from the part's texture itself.
