"For the good of all Kerbalkind."

Created by director of the Kerbal Space Program, Nathan B.

A year after I first started playing KSP, I had come a long way. I had done landings, deployed rovers, flown spaceplanes and built space stations. Yet Kerbalkind still had not left a real impact on the Kerbin system. I decided it was time to build a base and space station on the Mun. The time for a real challenge was now, and Kerbals were about to start leaving their permanent mark on the solar system.

1: The Plan

1.1: Introduction

In my opinion, colonizing another world is a civilization's true sign that they are people of the stars. The Kerbal Space Program, Kerbin's sole space program, has well reached its one year anniversary. It was founded on July 4th, 2013, and immediately the first rockets were built. While some crashed, sadly killing its never-forgotten crew, we have always gotten back up. It wasn't long until we achieved orbit, and since then countless spacecraft have travelled beyond the atmosphere of Kerbin. Some stay in low orbit, some travel as far as Minmus. A landing of a spacecraft both manned and unmanned has been accomplished several times. A space station in orbit flies above our heads every few hours. A silent rover glides across the surface of the Mun, supplying Kerbalkind with a neverending stream of knowledge. We have done great things, but a permanent mark on our solar system has not been made. But, with the most recent, and daring, plan conceived so far, all is about to change. I present to you: the Mun Project, our plan to colonize and stay on the Mun.

About the Kerbal Space Program

Before the Kerbal Space Program, there used to be three space programs on Kerbin. These space agencies belonged to the nations of Kenair, Marentosch and Tohniv. (See map below.) However, after these space programs showed to be unsuccessful, a new idea was proposed to create one, singular space program, one that would not only represent one nation, but instead all Kerbin. After much agreement from all over the world, the Kerbal Space Program was founded on July 3rd, 2013. Within weeks the first Kerbals were in space and in orbit. Landings on the moons were achieved, and a space station began undergoing construction in low Kerbin orbit. We were on their way to greatness.

"To go to new heights, to acheive greater things, and to raise the flag of Kerbin on other worlds, for the good of all Kerbalkind."

We, the Kerbal Space Program, believe in our statement to the world and to ourselves. Doing greater things and bringing glory to Kerbin is our goal. And, for over a year now, we've been doing so. While landing on our moons and creating large spacecraft outside of the atmosphere prove we have the technology capable of making an impact in the universe, the task itself remains undone. In the far future we plan to set up permanent base on other planets and their moons. With the Mun Project we will learn the essentials of extraplanetary colonization.

More ready than ever to take the leap of faith, we begin the Mun project.

1: The Plan

1.2: Overview

The Mun Project's goal is this: colonize the mun. More specifically, we want to build a large space station in orbit around the Mun as well as a Base on the Mun itself. These will be called Mun Station One (MSO) and Mun Base One (MBO). However, colonization is no easy task, and our goal will require us to create new innovations for every mission.

Huge Object Orbital Launcher (HOOL)

One of the largest launch stages ever built, the Huge Object Orbital Launch is a step up from its predecessor, the Heavy Object Orbital Launcher. The HOOL can launch massive payloads into orbit. Upon launch the solid rocket boosters ignite, along with the 25x4 liquid engine. The next stage decoupled the launch clamps. After the SRBs are empty they decoupled as well. The liquid engine then carries the payload nearly into orbit, where then it is lost and a secondary engine will kick in. This launch stage will be essential in delivering modules to both Mun Base One and Mun Station.

Munar Transfer Vehicle

The Munar Transfer vehicle does exactly what it's called: it transfers payloads big and small to the Mun. However, this spacecraft is a little more complex than what you see at first glance. The vehicle comes with 80 units of mono propellant, along with RCS ports for careful maneuvering. The vehicle gets electricity from four radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs), which also gives power to whatever payload the vehicle is holding. Furthermore, using an efficient combination of a skipper engine and an S3-7200 tank, it will always have plenty of fuel once it reaches its destination.

Crew Habitation Module

The Habitation Module is a small, but advanced, spacecraft. Its primary goal is to store Mun Base crew inside, and it can house up to six Kerbals. It is also a highly maneuverable spacecraft. With three external engines and an advanced SAS module, the Habitation Module has high turning torque along with high thrust, making relocating very easy. finally, the Habitation Module also comes with a fully RTG-powered electrical system (backed up by solar panels), landing lights, high power storage and six landing legs.

Refuel Truck

The Refuel Truck is a piece of engineering genius. Before the current model this truck went through several test runs. But, in the end, this design turned out to be the best of all its rivals. The Refuel Truck's job is to refuel spacecraft coming and going between MSO and MBO. Much like the Habitation Module the Refuel Truck is powered solely by RTGs, but for safe measures it also comes with a well-sized solar panel array. The electrical system is also made complete with a handful of batteries. The truck also comes with a few maneuvering devices of its own. First off, it can drive anywhere using its eight wheels, but if it needs to go far then liquid engines are an option. After using those engines it can make a safe touchdown using landing legs, which then retract and put it back on it wheels. But how does the Refuel Truck refuel other spacecraft? Using Advanced Grabbing Units on both ends of the vehicle the truck can attach to spacecraft from any side and reufel, detach and drive away. Overall, we are proud of this spacecraft, and we are excited to get it out in the field.
