Memory fading

Recommended Posts

I know if you select a planet and plan an intercept, once the plotted course is set in the SOI of the planet, you can tab to the planet and see that intercept and then tweak it, which I thought was excellent.

I've forgotten HOW I can tweak it, as when I tab to the planet I lose the maneuver options, etc.

Just brain fade here, can someone re-tutorial me?

Thanks.

I can always look back at the maneuver node and click on it to reenable the adjustment handles. Is that what you mean? Sometimes it is tricky to find a perspective that doesn't also click through to the planet near the maneuver node.

Yeah, that does come up. Also other space objects, although you can turn them off.

I strongly recommend Blizzy's PreciseNode. It lets you press 'O' to open the node, and has all sorts of nifty editing options. Much easier to be adding or removing 0.1/0.01 dv when fine tuning that Duna intercept than using the stock maneuver node arms..

Yeah, +1 for the precise node mod. There's really no good stock solution. Sure, it's usually possible to play with camera orientation until you can see both the planet and the node on screen at once, but the node handles can then become really difficult to use.

If you want to stay completely mod free, it might be useful to know that if you hover the cursor over a node handle you can use the mouse wheel to make small adjustments.... but this, too, is a bit buggy at the moment.

Yes, I meant the adjustment handles, likely i was using an edge on view earlier to get them in sight. And I agree, the mouse wheel is still a bit sensitive/buggy.

I'll look at precise node as well, though lately I've just been playing stock.

Another option is to use the RCS translation controls. I'll do this a bunch for mid course corrections. You just need to watch your predicted trajectory around your target.

I don't even bother making maneuver nodes to trim orbits like this, just a bit of trial and error to figure out which directions get me the approach I want.

You can click on the target's orbit and select Focus View to have it centered (instead of tabbing). Then left click on the maneuver node again to open it up. If the maneuver node is very close to other stuff, it might take a couple of clicks to open it up, but it always works in my experience. Just don't double click. Then you can zoom in on the target planet and still have the maneuver node open so that you're able to tweak it. If it's out of the screen or it's unresponsive, move the camera around so the maneuver node is closer to the center of the screen. I've never had much of a problem with using stock maneuver nodes to tweak planetary encounters (I always had Conic Patch Draw Mode set to 0 for more intuitive encounters, gravity assists etc).

Also, MechJeb includes the same node utility as PreciseNode.
