KSC2 Functionality

Recommended Posts

This has actually been suggested before...probably more than once. Many people liked the idea just 'cause it's a nostalgia trip and you'd be able to show people what it was like building back then. But then...aren't the older builds of KSP still available for download from the store page? I own the game on Steam so I never really looked >.>

As far as I know, no. They're not. There've been plans to release a sort of collector's edition kind of thing, with all major version releases included... but that's not slated till after 1.0, at least.

Out of interest, why can't you download more than one version back?

Well, I don't know the official reason, but if I had to guess I'd go with it wastes server space, and has the potential to increase server load to an unacceptable threshold... But as I said, I don't know for sure. Might also be that the devs themselves don't keep copies of old versions, but I think that unlikely, to be honest.

The one version back is, as far as I know, only there to help the community, in case someone wants the last stable version again. (Might be that a bug slipped through the nets that made the game unplayable, might be they don't like playing mod free and want the old version to play with until their favourite mods are updated, etc.)

Each version of KSP is in the realm of ~300mb or so, and it gets a little bigger with every update. Keeping all the old versions? Well... if we just go by major releases, even, since 0.13.3, we've got 0.14, 0.15, 0.16, 0.17, 0.18, 0.19, 0.20, 0.21, 0.22, 0.23, 0.23.5. 11 separate builds, at least. That's a good several GB that'd just be sitting there for the most part, generally just wasting server space... I suppose they could set up an 'official repository' on a public file host somewhere, but since the versions since 0.13.3 are the ones you had to pay for, I doubt they'd publicly release any of them for free like that.

But remember, I am just speculating; the only way to know the official reason would be to go pester Rowsdower about it. Even if he doesn't know, he's the only one that frequents the forums that is able to find out... except perhaps Ted, but I hear he's on vacation.

Anyway, this thread isn't really the place for this. If you want to continue talking about this, feel free to PM me. :)

Anyway, OP's idea is, I think, a little far-fetched. You'd basically be asking the devs to go dig up old part models and old part .cfgs and try to work them into the current game engine. The current game engine uses PartModules, and to my knowledge back then the parts did not... Even the save games were a fair bit different form than they are at the moment. I'm not sure it's really feasible, with the amount of head-scratching trying to reimplement old parts into the current state of the game.

Thanks for the unofficial answer!

I think the spare parts at the island runway are the most we're gonna get

With the mod Kerbal town ( I think) it has the ability to select the Easter egg "old KSP" site to launch from. I did it yesterday on my live stream. As with accidentally launching a Truck from SXT there and Jeb had a blast (really) driving and trying to break the SXT truck into pieces.

Kerbal town link

It's in General Discussion, and they're only collecting versions up to 0.13.3 (and the 0.18.3 demo version). Distributing any later versions is piracy, as after 0.13.3 you had to purchase the game to get any later versions.
